Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

I thought last week was busy but it’s even more hectic this weekend. A large group of Westbury runners are up in Snowdonia for the weekend enjoying some serious trail running in the high mountains.

Tomorrow we have the London Marathon and a large contingent of our club will be enjoying some of the famous landmarks along the 42km course. If you’re interested in following their progress then do take a look at facebook as their numbers are shown so you can track their progress on the official London Marathon website.

We must also mention this Sunday’s Cardiff Half Marathon as we have a good number of Westbury runners in the race. This is also just one of the events in the Super Half series, see the newsletter below for more details.

Is there anything else going on this weekend I’ve forgotten to mention? If I have then do let me know, ideally with a brief description and a few pictures so I can share it with the club.

Tuesday and Thursday Intervals

See facebook for details.

Club Supper Returns – Monday 10th October

Would you like to enjoy another club supper, well you’re in luck because it’s back for October! This time on a Monday evening after our group runs from Coombe Dingle. The date for your diaries is Monday 10th October with the plan to sit down and eat for 8:15pm. If interested please respond to the facebook posting or this e-mail by 6th October.

Upcoming Fixtures for Senior Men by Mike Mewse

There is a full fixture list of races coming up over the winter season. Westbury Harriers Men want to maintain the momentum from last year’s cross-country season – when, led by Scott Campbell, we decisively won Division 2 of the Gwent League. Now we’ve regained top flight of Gwent Cross Country League we’re aiming to race strongly in all age groups – Senior Men , V35, V45, V55 and V65  – so check out the Gwent fixtures and get some training in on the hills and mud. Gwent XC League fixtures are on 15th Oct in Cardiff,  Sat 12th Nov (our home fixture at Blaise Castle) and Sat 3rd Dec at Pembrey Country Park.

We also want to make an impact in road racing and this year we’ve already made the top 20 in the Midlands (out of 115 teams) and are racing in the English Road Relays Final on 8th Oct.

A strong entry will be needed in the Tri Counties Cross Country Champs (inc Avon County Champs) at Bath University in December where we will contest Senior Men, V40, V50 and V60 categories. No drinking over New Year please as the South West XC Champs in early January will need fast legs and clear minds !

We are also entering the National 12 stage Road Relay – a massively prestigious event – and a very high class event.

There are inevitably some clashes and you won’t be able to run every race (unless your name is Robin Phillips !) so it’s best to plan out your own winter of racing and training – but please support the team events.

The British Masters 5K Championships is in Battersea Park on 4th December – the day after a Gwent League – so speedsters may be heading to London whilst the powerful, distance boys will head to West Wales. Westbury Harriers have had British 5K champions in recent years – Vicky Tester and Nigel Gates – and we have great potential in our vet / masters athletes

Our top runners may choose to run in the British Cross Challenge – a 5 race series in Wales, Scotland and England with thousands of pounds of prize money – and remember … we love prize money !!

Coming up soon – Gwent League Cross Country in Cardiff on 15th October  and British Masters Cross Country Relays  (V35, 45, 55, 65) in Nottingham on 29th October.

Chris Palmer and Mike Mewse will be organising teams and doing entries where needed. We will support runners of all abilities, guide you to the right events and help you with training plans. So …. be ready for emails, phone calls, texts and late-night knocks on your front door with entry forms !!

Blaise Gwent League Volunteers Needed – Saturday 12th November

We’ll need people to marshal the course, parking support & setup/clear up. Shifts are likely to be organised for morning / afternoon sessions, and if you know of anybody who’d be able to support who isn’t racing that would be even better! Friends, family even the next door neighbours, all help is appreciated and needed for the big day.

If you could provide your details please using the link below that will help us organise volunteers and rota’s.  https://westburyharriers.co.uk/gwent-league-volunteering/
