ACADEMY (8-11 years)
MONDAYS 6-6.45pm or 7-8pm
The Academy we have set up at Westbury Harriers is a well-established and thriving group of youngsters. Currently numbering 50, the boys and girls range from 8 to 11 years of age (school years 3-6). From September through to April we meet at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, and then from May through to July we meet at Blaise Castle
We train every Monday evening during school term-time. During their time in the Academy, children develop and hone the fundamental movement skills they require to progress as athletes. We cater for children of varying ability levels by concentrating on specific and individual needs, and particular emphasis is placed upon the agility, balance and co-ordination skills. Most importantly though, we ensure that everyone’s having fun!
Healthy competition is another important part of helping youngsters to realise their potential, and over the winter a select group from our Academy compete in the Gloucestershire Cross Country League or Gwent Cross Country league. For everyone else, there’s the option of participating in the less formal and hugely enjoyable Junior Parkrun, which is held every week in various locations.
All of our Academy sessions are led by dedicated volunteers who hold an England Athletics Coaching & Leading qualification. As our club relies solely on the help of volunteers, we do expect parents to sign up on a rota to support the coaches at these sessions.
Westbury Harriers is a diverse club and we welcome everyone to join our thriving and successful group. As the Academy is currently oversubscribed, your child may need to remain on the waiting list for a while before joining the club. We will, however, do our best to get your child involved at the earliest possible opportunity.
