Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

I thought I’d start this week’s editorial by congratulating Clare Jordon on her 100th parkrun, and she had plenty of support on her 5k run as was accompanied by her Group 5 running buddies. Naturally Blaise Castle was chosen as the course because it is the best location of them all (not that I’m biased)!

Pictured below are the Saturday Water Tower Group out and about on a trail loop around Blagdon Lake. Thanks to Becky and Mike for leading the away day.

Tuesday Running Session at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals

Once again we’re at Coombe Dingle for the session on Thursday  for:  3mins – 2mins  – 90secs – 1 min – 45secs – 30secs – 45secs – 1min – 90secs  – 2mins – 3mins. Basically the intervals decreases to 30 seconds then increase back up again to 3 mins. (1min recovery throughout).

*option to drop the 3mins to 2mins. If it’s hot then don’t forget to bring a drink.

The Tuesday track session at Yate will be published on facebook nearer the time.

Yate Track Taster and Time Trial Evening – Friday 23rd June.

Lovely conditions for track running with warm weather and no wind. This brought out the best from our Westbury athletes with some top class running – and some excellent work from the time keeping and recording team. Well done to everyone who ran at the track this evening. For many it was an adventure out of the normal comfort zone, nevertheless some really impressive times and plenty of smiles too.

There were two 1500m races followed by a 4 x 100m relay involving all the runners.

Chris Palmer achieved a double – winning in the A race 1500m and the 4 x 100m relay with Judy Knights winning the B race 1500m.

The races were followed by a prize giving ceremony outside the club house.

Full results are on Mark Andrew’s post but Sandy Masters’ 5.50.8 was outstanding,  nine seconds faster than the top UK time in her FV65 age group this season. Melinda Savva’s 6.34.6 is 12th fastest in her UK FV60 age group. Full results below:

Cotswold Relay Saturday 1st July

Good luck to all the relay teams for next Saturday’s Cotswold Way Relay. With luck you will be blessed with another weekend of sunshine!

To make the event a success the organisers are looking for volunteers from each club taking part.  We have three teams so they would like us to provide three volunteers.  The roles are usually helping at a road crossing or manning a water station.  We will be allocated a stage near to Bristol so no early rising or long drives required.  Please get in touch with Eithne Noonan if you are interested.

Club Twitter and Instagram

The club have both a Twitter and Instagram account so very much worth checking out for all the latest club events! Who know’s, perhaps you’ll even see yourself pictured! Links below: https://twitter.com/WestburyH  and https://www.instagram.com/westbury_harriers/

If you’re also running a Parkrun, or any other event for the matter it’s great if you can also publicise the club by wearing a club vest/t-shirt or even handing out some of our new Westbury Harrier business cards.

Club Championship Races

Don’t forget we have the next club championship event coming up on Tuesday 27th July in the form of the Sri Chimnoy 2 miler at 19:30.  It takes place in Eastville Park and the course is an accurately measured, undulating 1-mile pavement loop around the perimeter of the park. Shaded by trees for much of its length, the course is perfect for summer evening racing or speedwork.

You can enter online or enter on the day although the organisers do request you download and fill out the entry form to bring on the day. Entry cost on the day for seniors is £6. https://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/races/bristol#series-event-full-3

Club Feedback

Q. The club championship should be more visible.

A. We have revised the club championship page on the website. We are ensuring club championship races are being promoted and reported on more. We are frequently publishing the standings so people can see their involvement.

We would also thank the club championship committee (Judy, Eithne, Trevor, Mike.C) for organising and running the club championships.

Q. Westbury should have some Park Run days during the summer, where lots of runners (adults/juniors) turn up to one particular Park Run in Westbury vests, this will help promote the club and will be a good  PR exercise, from this we may get some runners to the club that end up racing.  Once the Blaise Park Run is up and running there will be a fantastic chance to promote the club locally.

A. We organised people to attend Blaise Parkrun on 17/06/23 to support the parkrun and promote the club. People supported by running and spectating in club colours. We opened up the clubhouse afterwards for complimentary refreshments to all parkrunners. Club members chatted to other parkrunners and told them about the club. It was also a great easy social for regular club members and a good use of the club house facility. We aim to do this again. A volunteer take over is also planned.

Q. Can people post up what races they will attend. To get a group together.

A. Anyone is welcome to use the Facebook group to say races they will attend and if anyone want to go together, lift share etc.

Q. Long runs on a Saturday or a Wednesday for group 5 people for people progressing from 10kms to half marathons.

A. They are social runs and anyone is welcome to join. It has been encouraged for people from group 5 to post if they are going and offer a group 5 option so other group 5 member knows others will be there to run with.

Q. Increasing the prize money for the club championships

A. The prizes are already quite generous. Agreed that information about the prizes available should be on the website as some people don’t know that there are prizes.

Q. To publicise who is running in what group

A. Unfortunately, the app doesn’t allow this and the only way the information could be shared would be one of the leaders manually extracting the information each week. We’ve asked for a number of enhancements to be made to the app and if the situation changes we’ll let you know.

We hope that each group has sufficient numbers, so each week people turn up they have a group to run with. Groups with lower numbers have been discussed at the coaching meetings to see what we can do to improve numbers.

Upcoming Races

Some local races of interest this week include the Thornbury 10k on Thursday evening (29th June) a popular race along rolling country lanes with a finish at the Anchor pub! I’ve just tried the link and as of this evening it’s still possible to enter. https://thornburyrc.fullonsport.com/event/thornbury-10k-2023/profile

The next day (Friday 30th June) is the Nailsea Running Club Beer and Banger 10K.  A very popular race along country lanes and as a bonus the event entry fee includes a BBQ sausage in a roll and free drink. I’m afraid entry for this event is fully booked up.

Strava Segment of the Week

Well done to Ben Wood on 3rd place age category win in the Maverick Race in the Forest of Dean. While undertaking this trail half marathon Ben achieved a second fastest time on Strava segment Cycle trail down to gate in 5:21.
