Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editors Piece
Westbury Harriers’ were out in force yesterday at the Blaise Parkrun using the opportunity to support both the parkrun event and promote the club. Hopefully the offer of free tea, coffee and biscuits and chatting to club members may entice a few parkrunners to join the club.
Many thanks to Mark, Sarah, David and Alison for organising the morning of publicity and facilitating with parkrun. It worked very well and we hope to do something similar in the near future.
Tuesday Running Session at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals
At Coombe Dingle for 10 x 2mins (each 2 mins will include a 30secs ‘pick up’ at a random time, listen for the whistle). 1 minute recovery. Aim for 5k pace and pick up to 3k pace for the 30secs. *Option to do 8. If it’s a hot one then don’t forget to bring a drink along.
The Tuesday track session at Yate will be published on facebook nearer the time.
Yate Track Taste/Time Trail/Race Evening – Friday 23rd June.
A reminder of this event coming up next Friday. We didn’t know what to call it, it really is whatever you want it to be! It is an opportunity to run on the track, particularly for those who may not do so regularly or at all.
Meet from 7pm with the fun starting from 7:30pm. We will be holding a series of 1500m runs, runners will be put into pace related groups so everyone should be able to run in a way they feel comfortable with.
It will be timed and there may even be prizes! You can chose to be competitive or just enjoy running on the track it really is up to you! We hope to finish with some sort of relay with each runner covering a shorter distance.
The club house and bar will be open so it should be a sociable Friday evening out as well! There is no charge but we do need to organise the runs and know who is coming so please book on using Run Together, the link is below. https://tinyurl.com/3a4a3xa8
Clevedon Midssummer 10k – Tuesday 14th June, by Mark Andrews
I guess there is a clue in the name that it might be a warm evening and it certainly was. Club Championship points at stake no doubt contributed to a great Westbury turnout. The course is as flat as any 10k could possibly be, with real PB potential on a cooler evening.
The Westbury men were lead home by Ben Wood, followed by Alastair and Matt. Steph was first Westbury lady followed by Tamsin and Laura. The middle of the pack seemed to be dominated by Westbury runners which was good competitive fun for those of us involved.
Well done to everyone who raced this evening. Congratulations to Ann Lovell on yet another age category win and 2nd places for Tamsin and Sarah in their respective categories!
A lovely evening with everyone supporting and encouraging each other.

Club Championship Races
I now have an update of the Club Championship standings after the Clevedon Midsummer 10k, shown below. Note in 11th place we have Sarah Andrews and Immy Ireland in joint place with 51 points and for the men it’s Richard Hughes in 11th with 49 points. There’s no space to show the full standings here but they are on Judy’s facebook posting dated a couple of days ago.
The next three events coming up include the Sri Chimney 2 miler on Tuesday 27th June 19:30, the Bitton 5k Wednesday 5th July and the Age Grader on Sunday 23rd July.
GWR Towpath Race No2
There were no club championship points or team awards available last night for the second race in the towpath series, it was all just for fun! Not quite so many runners out this time, perhaps because it was just too damm hot, or perhaps people were recovering from other races. Even so, there was still some serious running with some fantastic results.
First across the line was Robert Farley (Bitton Road Runners) in 34:52 and first lady was Katrina Entwistle (Bristol and West) finishing in 39:05.
Some prizes to take home for Westbury as well with Ian Gawinowski first V40, Sophie Voller 2nd overall female and first in age group, and Kate Hoffen and Maggie Salter both taking first place in their respective age categories.
The next race in the series is on Friday 7th July

South West 5k PB Series, Odd Down, Bath 14th June, By Mike Mewse
Another great evening of racing organised by Bristol Track Club. In hot and humid conditions there were some brave running form our small Westbury Harriers contingent.
Finn Goodhew (U20) was in good form and duly delivered a new PB of 15.52 ahead of Alex Hamblin (SM) 16.58 and Alec Sampson, (V40) 17.03 . There were also great results for Dominic Hurford (V45) in 19.56 and George Pickering (SM) in 22.26. Well done boys !
Sri Chinmoy Race 2 at Eastville Park
Just three Westbury Harriers at last week’s sunny Sri Chinmoy Race 2 at Eastville Park. Debbie Hunt had a great run and Jay Hunt took home a medal for 1st overall (10:59) and Eithne Noonan a medal for 1st F60 (18:53). Congratulations.
Next Race: Tuesday 27th June 7:30pm which is also a Club Championship!
Bristol Running Show , Sunday 16th July
The Club has a stand booked at this event and are looking for volunteers to help out on the day.
This year’s event will be taking place at the BAWA Club, Southmead Road, Bristol BS34 7 RG between 9am and 4pm.
The event itself includes stands from local clubs as well as from a range of running related businesses. There are talks throughout the day and a series of runs in the morning. Entry is free but you do need to pre book tickets.
Last year we had a really wide range of Club Members who came along to help, from the Chairman and longstanding members right through to relatively new members which was really pleasing and gave a real flavour of everything that is great about the club! The experience of someone who has just joined can be just as valuable to someone thinking of joining themselves as the details that those of us who have been around for longer can give.
If you can help out this year please respond to Mark Andrews along with any preferred timing. He will then try and put together a rota to cover the day in manageable slots of about 2 hours.
