Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editors Piece
Only 27 more days to go before Christmas and that can only mean one thing, it’s time for a Christmas Treasure Hunt! Next weekend I’ll publish the ‘somethings’ and if I ask the Treasurer very nicely we may even have a prize for the winner.
Pictured below, a ‘cheeky’ smile from Sarah, who will be our Treasure Hunt judge and adjudicator for this years Christmas Treasure Hunt competition.
Gwent XC Fixture, Pembrey Country Park – Saturday 4th December
The third Gwent League of the season will be this Saturday, 4th December at Pembrey Country Park, SA16 0EJ. All the details of the fixture can be found here https://www.gwent-league.org.uk/fixtures.html.
It is truly lovely course at Pembrey, in a beautiful location. It is good underfoot through a mixture of forest trail, grass and with a sand dune thrown in too. You need to wear your Westbury vest and I would advise spikes or trail shoes.
The event is on RunTogether. £4 to be paid on the day.

Club Intervals and Yate Track Sessions
We are all back on the grass again at Coombe Dingle this week. The session involves some shorter intervals this week as it’s the Gwent on Saturday. Plan is 3 sets of 4 x 90secs (45secs recovery between the 90secs) and a slightly longer recovery between the sets of 2mins.
This weeks suggested Yate track session is one of Nicola’s favourites and very simple to remember. Just 8 x 800m (with a 200m jog recovery in between). We will begin with Nicola’s dynamic walking stretches then a few social warm-up laps before starting the intervals.
Westbury Harriers Kit Volunteer
The club are looking for a volunteer to take over looking after club kit. Not much to it but it makes sense if you are a regular down at training so you are able to pass on kit as required or hold occasional kit sales.
Going forward we are only holding stocks of vests as hoodies can be purchased online. We have a good, established working relationship with Ronhill Specials and also the online kitshop Professional Sport and Fitness. Please get in touch if you would be able to help.
A link to the online kit shop is below but please note that for completions a club vest must be worn which can be purchased directly through the club. https://www.psfshop.com/Westbury_Harriers_RC/cat1565820_4517716.aspx
Tri-counties Cross Country Championships
The Tri-counties XC is on Sunday 19th December in Bath. OPEN event race is at 14:10 and is 10.3km. Championship for Senior and Master Ladies (6.6km) 13:40
This is an event where we’ve had really good success in recent years both individually and team level, particularly in the age group categories so let’s try and get as many senior/vet men and women running. It’s nice and close and a good hard race to do before Xmas.
Senior Women (or Women Masters) can opt to enter either the 6.6km Women’s race or the 10.3km ‘Open’ race. (this option will only display once an entrant has checked on one of the SW/W35/W45/W55 age groups). Medals will be available for women in each race.
Senior Team Competitions: these will be on a Tri-County basis, with six men from the 10.3km race or four women from the 6.6km race to count in the (separate) competitions. A club’s team may include athletes qualifying for any of Avon / Somerset / Wiltshire.
Entries are done individually through the link below so please enter yourselves but you can claim the entry fee back. Please let your respective team manager know if you are racing so we know who is on the team and who to expect on the day. https://form.jotform.com/213065811737354
Weston Prom and Christmas Meal
Sandra Bailey-gard is kindly organising the annual Westbury post Weston prom Christmas meal on Thursday 16th Dec. The entries for the prom are online and in advance. https://westonac.co.uk/weston-prom-run/
If you want to come let Sandra know. Please put the money in an envelope with your name and menu choices and give to Sandra or Tamsin, at the latest by 7/12/21.
£11.99 2 course or 3 courses £13.99 (can round up to £12 & £14!)
Congratulations
Dan Summers was in a bit of a hurry to finish today’s Wiltshire AVR half marathon. Dan stormed around the course in a time of 1:16 (according to Strava). Great running Dan.
Scott Campbell was enjoying the Bicton Blister, a 10 miler near Exmouth. Scott completed the course in 1:07 to claim 5th place.
I was surprised to learn that yesterday’s Blorenge fell race took place, consider there were gale force winds that afternoon. I guess fell runners are made of tougher stuff than some of us road runners! Fortunately for Finn Goodhew he did not get blown off the top of the mountain and took 5th place overall and a second place category win.
An age category win for Kay Ridgwell at the mid-week Severn Bridge Night Race. Well done Kay.
Strava Segment of the Week
Well done to Barry Crab taking on some interval training on the Downs today. Barry had a personal record on Strava segment ‘Push to the roundabout in a time of 3:34.
