Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

Some glorious golden autumnal colours to enjoy at the moment. It’s even warm and dry under foot, what more of an excuse could you have to get out there and run!  The water tower runners were making the most of the fine weather this Saturday morning and even bumped into a few Harriers on route. A few weekends back the group were really adventurous and headed over to Chepstow to enjoy the Wye Valley. If you’re interested in their running journey take a look at the movie!  https://tinyurl.com/28jcyxww

The group meet every Saturday morning on the Downs by the water tower at 9:00. It’s a social run at a relaxed pace and the group try and run as much off-road running as possible.

Enjoy the opportunity.

Gwent League Senior Mens Results

The season of warm, dry and flat XC continued at Parc de Pugh in Brecon. A lovely setting welcomed us and saw some great performances from the senior and vet men. Oli Beale led us home in 31st place (3rd V40) although he lost a few plus points by running off with the Team Manager’s jacket at the end of the day!

Next came the always consistent Alex Hamblin, followed by Dan Summers making a welcome return to XC racing after around 8 or 9 years although he was probably hoping for more hills, with Scott Campbell and Chris Palmer not far behind making up the A team.

Good to see Ben Wood making his first appearance for Westbury Harriers, and good performances from Stephen Clayson and Dowan Kwon in their first XC season. Ewan Paton came 4th V50 with another strong performance and Geraint Torrington gained revenge over Ian Derrick from Cardiff to make it 1-1 for the season so far.

The great news is that Westbury are now 1st place in the 2nd Division! (moving up from 3rd place after Cardiff). Let’s make sure we continue this form into Pembrey!

Results: Oli Beale 31st, Alex Hamblin 44th, Dan Summers 62nd, Scott Campbell 76th, Chris Palmer 83rd, Jack Derrick 131st, Ewan Paton 137th, Robin Phillips 163rd, Stephen Clayson 173rd, Ben Wood 177th, Dowan Kwon 191st, Ian Gawinowski 200th, Paul Stuart 234th, Geraint Torrington 316th, Ian Derrick 347th

Race report by Scott Campbell

Pictured below, Stephen Clayson and Down Kwon enjoy a mud-free Brecon, phot thanks to Vicky Tester.

Some fantastic running by Antony Glover at last weekends Sodbury Slog. For a seventh year in a row he finished top veteran over 40 in a race that is infamous for its mud! Ben Rawlins also had a great race taking third place.

Pictured below Carol and Tim ‘enjoy’ negotiating a trench full of mud at the Sodbury Slog.

Seamus Robinson is also in terrific form having won the Northern Ireland & Ulster U17 Cross Country Championships on 6th November. This qualifies him for the Irish National Championships in early December.

Strava Segment of the Week

Well done to Oliver Hodgson with a few loops of the Downs today. He achieved a best estimate 10k effort in a time of 47:35 but also person records a plenty! Some of his highlights include Strava segment Ladies kilometre in 4:25 and Downs Y in 13:16.
