Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editor’s Piece
I hope you all had a great Christmas. I managed to work my way through a box of Heroes, endless Stollen, lot’s of Christmas cake and far too many beers. Probably not the best preparation for running a BMAF masters 10K!
Picture from the Past
Another blast from the past, thanks to John Canning. This week we have Martin Shore running the National 12 Stage Relay in the mid 90’s.
Christmas Special Treasure Hunt Winner
You needed to guess the Christmas song/carol and film, then find the following somethings including: nativity scene, Christmas tree, Mistletoe, Holly, Robin, Christmas lights, Santa, reindeer, snow flake and a seasonal selfie.
Sarah and I donned our judging hats over the Christmas period and after much deliberation came up with a winner, although it was not an easy decision. All the entries were of a very high quality with some very imaginative contributions and amusing selfies.
We can only have one winner so a massive round of applause to Eithne Noonan. Well done Eithne, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing your somethings and your selfie made us all smile. Some Up and Running Vouchers will be on the way to you soon.
Masters 10K
For those more experienced runners in the club (over 35) we have a virtual 10k organised by the British Masters Athletics Federation (BMAF). It takes place on a date of your choosing in the period 27-31 December and all you need to do is run a 10k, track, trail or road route which can be out and back or circular in nature. If you’re a BMAF area member it is free but only £1 if you enter as Westbury Harriers (this is to cover admin costs). Entry via the Open Track site.
Membership Renewals
You may have seen a reminder in your inbox that membership renewals are due in January. It’s also worth noting that your membership includes an England Athletics registration fee which provides insurance cover.
Although Covid 19 has meant the club has had to operate differently we are still organising training, social runs, interval sessions and other challenges, such as treasure hunts, quizzes, and running challenges. In fact for the seniors there are more sessions on offer, most of which are advertised on the RunTogether app.
We hope people do choose to renew their membership next year and return to training sessions in the New Year. If people do have comments around membership, or if there are other things people think we should do/offer during this time and in the future, please do private message or email Tamsin. She will take these to the next committee meeting in January for discussion.
Runtogther app and Website
Do keep an eye on facebook and Runtogether as there are a few group runs on offer. For example there’s a social trail run from the Blaise club house taking place tomorrow morning at 9:30am, although places are going fast. Booking via Runtogther.
Strava Results of the Week
Well done to Time Carr who’s already run his BMAF Virtual 10k Challenge. Tim ran that old favourite, up and down the Portway in an impressive time of 49:31. While on his run Tim also obtained a number of Personal Records on various Strava segments including ‘Dualled Portway outbound’ in 6:02, ‘Portway Roman Way to Sylvan Way’ (4:42) and ‘Jax 04’ (7:48).

January 2021 – Virtual Rollick Although we are disappointed not to be holding our typical Riverbank Rollick in January 2021, Thornbury Running Club are delighted to be holding the inaugural ‘Virtual Rollick’. To make sure that the spirit of the infamous ‘Rollick’ is not lost, we expect at least half of your run to be off-road and to involve an acceptable level of mud wind and water.
