Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editors Piece
Today we had the Running Show at BAWA, Filton. Once again Westbury Harriers had a stand and with luck we may have attracted a few members to join. There were also plenty of trade stands showcasing running gear from the likes of Up and Running* as well as people offering massage treatment and pilates. There were some interesting talks and discussions throughout the day. We had club members Dan Summers talking about navigation for beginners, and Anne Dockery describing being a masters champion runner.

Leadership in Running Fitness
Congratulations to Hannah Large for completing her Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course. We welcome her to the senior leading/coaching team. We are really grateful to Hannah for completing the course and volunteering her time.
If you are interested in becoming a group leader, please speak to Mark Andrews (Senior Coaching Co-ordinator) or Emma Woodworth (Junior/Academy Coaching Co-ordinator). We are always looking for people to assist with our groups. At the moment we need particularly need support with the academy, junior boys and group 6. The LiRF is a remote course funded by the club.
Clevedon SwimRun
A huge congratulation to both Steph Cummins and Matt Munday who competed in the Clevedon SwimRun last week.
Steph stormed to win fastest female and the fastest overall individual victory with a time of 0:49:14. (Race organisers only announced her as fastest female which was rather frustrating).
Matt finished a bit lower down the order at 0:52:31.
It’s a great small event organised by Clevedon Open Water. Really bizarre but fun course using the marine lake, promenade and area near St Andrew’s Church which followed the order of 550m run, 250m swim, 2k run, 250m swim, 750m run, 250m swim, 2k run, 250m swim, 550m run.
Saucony and Monday Evening Training – Monday 17th July from 5:30pm
This Monday we have the Saucony Team with the ‘Take Courage’ van visiting us so training will relocate to Coombe Dingle, for one night only. There will be an opportunity to try our a range of shoes on an actual run and shoes that may be available include Endorphin Speed 3, Endorphin Pro 3, Guide 16, Shift 3 and Peregrine 13, and perhaps others from their range. Try and aim to arrive 30 minutes earlier than usual if you would like to try some shoes on for size before the run.
PROPS Charity Ride – Bristol 2 Bordeaux
Well done to Jayne Pemble who recently took part in the PROPS Charity Bike Ride Bristol 2 Bordeaux. Jayne goes on to say, ‘along with 70 riders and 35 support volunteers, I have just completed a 500 mile charity cycle ride from Bristol to Bordeaux (B2B) for the Bristol based charity PROPS, based in Fishponds.
B2B is a 4 day, 500 mile cycle from 5th – 8th July 2023. PROPS do life-changing work empowering young adults with learning disabilities with paid employment, skills, training and more. This will help so many young individuals achieve independence, and to realise their full potential in our community. The B2B cycle is PROPS’s main annual fundraising initiative and so far have raised nearly £80,000.
100% of your donations go directly to PROPS – this year funds will ensure a high street Cafe in Bristol in Bedminster can open in the autumn, to train and employ PROPS Trainees.
PROPS is a unique charity – there is nothing like this in the entire UK. Four of the trainees came on the B2B trip and took part in supported cycling. Having spoken to them, it is humbling how appreciative they are to benefit from PROPS services and to stand a chance of having some independence.
Here is the link to my PROPS fundraising page – I know purse pockets are tight at the moment but it would be great if you could sponsor me.’ https://www.propsbristol.org/Fundraisers/jayne-cycles-bristol-to-bordeaux-2023
