Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

During the summer months it seems there’s a race on almost every day!  In fact some of our club members have raced 4 times or more in a single week!  Do enjoy all the events that are on at the moment but do remember to have a few rest days. If you are racing and feel dog-tired why not just take it easy and enjoy the scenery instead?

Tuesday Running Session at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals

The Tuesday track session at Yate will be published on facebook nearer the time.

The Thursday interval session at Coombe Dingle  a session that’s very easy to remember and program into your watch. It’s 6 sets of the following:

2mins – 30secs jog recovery – 30secs fast – 1min jog recovery.  *Option to do 5 sets.

Aim for 5k pace on the 2 mins, quicker than 1 mile pace on the 30secs, and to keep jogging on the shorter 30secs recovery

Great Western Runners Towpath Series – Race 3, Friday 7th July

The Towpath Series, organised by Great Western Runners, is made up of three 10k races, and a 5k race to finish off the series. These take place on a Friday evening over the summer months and are friendly, well organised races, with instant chip-timed results.

It’s a great way to finish off a busy working week and set you up for the weekend as a quick dash along the towpath clears the head and is the perfect way to de-stress. The kilometres just fly past too, because the surrounding scenery is stunning. It’s an out and back route along the River Avon, passing underneath Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge with Leigh Woods on the left and stunning views of the river to your right. At the turn there’s a friendly marshal who shouts your 5km time before your return back to the starting point.

For the third race in the series there were 80 runners taking part. Callum Moore (Great Western Runners) won the event in 35:01 but it was the Westbury women dominating the overall results, with age group wins in almost every age category plus a podium place.

It was a real battle to the finish between Sophie Voller from Westbury and Fran Rawlings (Clevedon AC), but it was Sophie who just edged ahead with a sprint finish, claiming first place in 43:39.

Westbury also had Kate Hoffen winning the V50 age group in 49:38 and Sandy Masters celebrating a V60 category win in 47:51.

Other results: 11th Ian Gawinowski 40:58, 22nd Paul Turner 45:18, 29th Trevor Fitsall 47:02, 30th Gary Jamison 47:29, 32nd Immy Ireland 47:36, 34th Mark Andrews 47:41, 39th Sandra Williams 50:51, 46th Juliet Milne 52:36, 63rd Carol Fee 59:04, 69th Tim Carr 01:00:22 and 76th Heather Griffin 01:03:35

The next race in the series, which is a 5k, takes place on Friday 18th July. Registration is from 6:30pm at the Ashton Park School, then a short walk to the underpass for the 7:30pm start. Please visit the Great Western Runners website for more information.

Saucony and Monday Evening Training – Monday 17th July

Avon 5k Road Relay Championships, Cleeve, Sunday 27th August

This is a great event and one in which we’ve had lots of success in the past. Great venue, great racing and a brilliant atmosphere. As it’s a championship event, entries will be completed and paid for by the club.

We can enter as many teams as we like, so would be good to put out a range of age group teams. All abilities welcome. Please bear with us as organising relay teams is not easy, we will try and put you in your appropriate age group teams but may have to move people around to ensure complete teams. New for this year is a FV65 category which is great.  Distance – 5km per leg:

  • Ladies Team categories: U20 women, Senior Women, FV35, FV45, FV55, FV65 – all 3 legs per team.
  • Men’s Team categories U20 Men, MV50, MV60 – 3 people per team
  • Men – senior men, MV40 – 4 legs per team

Bitton 5k Race 3

Those of us who have been competing in this summer’s series of races were joined tonight by an impressive turnout of Westbury athletes chasing Club Championship points!

Did our experience of running the course give us an advantage? For most of us the answer was no! We still started far too quickly and struggled in the second half of the race which was not only uphill as always but also into the wind this evening!

Results now out, a strong second place finish for Alex Hamlin, followed in third place by Alec Sampson, Ben Wood in 10th place the third Westbury man home. Tamsin Chick the first Westbury lady, closely followed by Vicky Tester and Sandy Masters. Lots of really good performances and a number of PBs!

Race report and photographs by Mark Andrews.
