Saturday 30th April
Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editors Piece
Perhaps you’re as forgetful as me but I only recently realised that this Monday is a bank holiday so there won’t be normal training in the evening.
As a substitute Richard Hughes has organised a social run in the morning, and this can be booked via the RunTogether website (although I think the places may be booking up fast).
Have a great bank holiday weekend and I hope to see you for the big social event of the year at next Saturday’s Awards Night.
Awards Night Saturday 7th May
Next Saturday we have the Awards Night from 7pm at Westbury-on-Trym village hall. It’s been a while since the last event so it will be great to see everybody and celebrate the achievements of the people at the club.
There are a wide range of categories that recognise running success, improvement, commitment, teams, age groups volunteers and much, much more. Entry is free. There will be a bar and nibbles, although no buffet on this occasion.
Thursday Club and Yate Track Intervals
In reverse order, starting with Thursday this week. We will be on the grass at Coombe Dingle with he following session: 4 mins (2 mins recovery), 4 x 1 min (1 min recovery), 4 mins (2 mins recovery), 4 x 1 min (1 min recovery) then a final 4 minutes. There is the option to drop the 4 minutes to 3 minutes.
Aim to go at a 10k pace on the 4 minutes and quicker then 5k pace on the 1 minutes. Aim to main effort and pace on each of the 4 minutes.
The Yate track session is as follows;
- 4x 700m, with a 200m (2 minute) slow jog/walk recovery. Start off at 5K pace, but go faster for the last 300m of each rep.
- 800m “Float” in between (5 minute) slow jog/walk recovery.
- 3x 200m all out, with 100m (1 minute) slow jog/walk recovery.
It will commence with dynamic stretches and couple of warm up laps and finish with some warm down laps and stretches.
Please also remember to pay you track fees for the month of April. Thank-you.
Shepperdine Marathon
Some great running by Helen Sawyer 3:57:01, 2nd place category position) and Robin Phillip’s 3:08:51 (3rd in category group) at last weekend’s Shepperdine Marathon. I couple of pictures below provided by Rogue Runs.
British Masters Open Relays
We all had the opportunity to read about the women’s success at the Sutton Park relays in last weeks weekly news, but not the men. This week we have the race report from Mike.
Great running from our teams at Sutton Park in a high class event that brought out the very best Masters teams from Scotland, Wales and England.
In the V65 Men our men couldn’t quite match their winning performance in the BMAF Cross Country relays but provisional results gave them a fine fifth team place. Nigel Gates posted a 20.50 leg with Mike Mewse in 22.15 and David George in 23.05. Their 1.06.10 total that was just over a minute short of the bronze medal.
Congratulations to the convincing winners Cambuslang, from the Glasgow area, with Paul Thompson posting the fastest individual leg of 19.14.
Well done to the teams from our local colleagues Hogweed Trotters (2nd in FV65) and Bristol & West.
Many thanks also (on a personal note) to our ladies team who were on hand to support their wobbly-legged male team mate !!

Just another reminder that it’s not too long to the best trail race in the county. If your not running then we would really appreciate your help to marshal the event as it’s a twisty course and we wouldn’t want anybody to get lost! If you do happen to be running then perhaps you can volunteer a friend, family member or neighbour to help out on the evening. There will be cake for all volunteers, what other incentive do you need!
Club Birthday
We had another club birthday this week so many happy to returns to Alex Hamblin, pictured below celebrating a win at the Riverbank Rollick a few years ago. I hope you had a great day.
I am starting to run out of facebook friends so if you do have a birthday coming up then don’t be shy! Let me know with a photo and we can all celebrate the occasion.
Strava Segment of the Week
I’ve been under an awful lot of peer pressure this week so I’m being forced to mention Mark Andrews in this weeks Strava Segment section.
Mark has local legend status on Strava segment ‘1st Hill’ with 3 (is that all?) efforts in the last 90 days.
