Saturday 12th March

Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

It certainly felt as if spring had finally arrived this morning as the Saturday Water Tower runners were blessed with blue skies and sunshine, it was even warm!

We were very lucky indeed to be able to enjoy a peaceful, carefree and tranquil run in the countryside around Bristol with the only hazard being the odd muddy puddle to negotiate!

The runners stop for an impromptu photo break, a colourful bunch indeed, blue and yellow very much the theme of the day. Photo credit to Sarah Andrews.

AGM

Please don’t forget the Annual General Meeting will be held virtually on Sunday 3rd April (details will be available nearer the time). We have a few posts that have become vacant, plus some new and existing posts that you, as members, may be interested in doing. The Membership Secretary and Senior Mens Team Manager are vacant but we’re also keen to lighten the load of the work involved in managing the juniors. We have a requirement for a Welfare Officer, Senior and Junior Coaches Coordinator and Summer Senior Team Manager (to act as a link with Yate and District). More details will be available in the AGM pack which will be sent out to members before the AGM.

If you are interesting in taking a more active role in the club please feel free to talk to any of the committee members for more information.

Yate Track Session

As normal the session will start with dynamic stretches, followed by three social laps.

Then the intervals themselves starting with: 400 meters (1 lap), 800 meters (2 laps), 1,200 meters (3 laps), 1,600 meters (4 laps)  with 400m recoveries in-between each interval.

We’ll end with a couple of warm downs laps and stretches.

UK Counties Athletics Union Inter Counties

Well done to all of our runners who competed for a join Avon and Somerset team at the UK Inter-Counties today.  The event, which doubles as the final of the UK Cross Challenge, was held on the notoriously muddy ‘fields’ around Prestwold Hall, north of Loughborough.

Seamus Robinson put in another vintage performance, with 9th place in the U17 men’s race, backed up by Finn Goodhew in a fine 64th (pictured below).  The club’s March Member of the Month Augustin Downing matched his Nationals performance with 45th in the U13 boys’ race.

With fields in each race approaching 300 county standard runners drawn from all over England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the standard was tough, but Catherine Treble (93rd Senior Woman), Estelle Lowe (82nd U13 girl) and Laura Chance (88th U15 girl) all managed top 100 places in the UK. Felicity Lower was 164th and Corinne Jones finished in 187th.

Our other representatives at this fixture were U15B Murray Pearson 157, U17W Abigail Woodworth 245, U15G Elen Ruck 191 and SM Ben Rawlins 224.

The cross-country season draws to an end next week, with the English Schools Championships in Kent, and the final Gwent League match in Swansea.

Gwent Cross Country League, Swansea

Well done to all the men who raced at Blaise. It was a great day for the club and we can now look forward to the final race of the season on Saturday 19th March at Singleton Park, Swansea – and we have plenty to run for !

The Senior Men are hoping to win Division 2 and clinch promotion to Division 1.

We need to hold off Cardiff University who are likely to have a good team out this time. There is a good chance for the V35s to claim a podium place and the V45s have a chance of winning the category with the Westbury V55s the most improved team in the entire programme of races at Blaise ! Many of our runners are also in strong individual positions as well – so lots to race for in this fixture. Every single runner counts in the competition so please sign up now.

It’s a long trip but we will be sharing travel and giving lifts where needed – travel / car share updates will be posted on Facebook.

Blaise Blazer 2022!

You may well remember I mentioned the Blaise Blazer in the newsletter a couple of weeks ago. Just as a reminder it’s the clubs very own trail race, a 4 mile dash set to the backdrop of the biggest hills and best views in the magnificent surrounds of Blaise Castle.

I can now confirm entries are open and you can enter here, but please remember that we also need volunteers to enable us to run the event. And cakes, we’ll need you to don your aprons and bake away so that the runners can enjoy a bite to eat after conquering Blaise’s little inclines.

More information on how you can help on the night will follow but the link to enter is below. The race take places on Monday 6th June, pre-race briefing at 19:15. It’s probably also the cheapest race you’ll enter this year at the bargain price of only £5 for affiliated runners. There are still plenty of prizes to be had for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, age group winners and team prizes.
