Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

As I said last week there are a lot of summer races in the diary. If you know of an event that may be of interest to our club members let me know and I’ll advertise it. Perhaps you’ve even taken part in a race and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have then provide me with some details, with a photo or two and I’ll circulate the information.

Thursday Intervals

For Thursday we have the following: 4 x 90 secs (reducing recovery 1min recovery, 40secs recovery, 20secs recovery) 2 mins recovery between each of the sets.

*Option to do 2 sets or miss the 4th interval in each set

Will aim to do as an out and back, the reducing recovery makes this tough! Aim is to make it the same distance for each of the 90secs so pacing is key. Aim for quicker than 5k pace

Yate track session will be published on facebook nearer the time.

Beggar Roost 6K Social Run – David George, Old Sodbury, Sunday 19th June

David George (in the centre of the picture) has been one of our established runners for many years. Like many others he has had recent birthdays in lockdown but is making up for lost time with celebration on the 19th June.

The 6k social run and event is suitable for all abilities with families welcome and will be followed by light refreshments at David’s house.  It’s all free and the run is now available on RunTogether.  When you sign up you will receive confirmation information. Alternatively you can email him on davidcharliegeorge@protonmail.com

Member of the Month Winners

Well done to Carol Fee (pictured) for winning this months nomination. Carol won for all her hard effort in organising the volunteers for the Blaise Blazer.

The junior win goes to Micheal Kelly for an impressive first place U23 category win (Micheal is only 16!) at the Blaise Blazer. He also was the 3rd scorer for the club meaning the team took 2nd place.

Up and Running vouchers will be on there way to you soon.

Clevedon 10k

It was a scorchio evening for the Clevedon 10k last Tuesday with some impressive results from the Westbury gang, pictured below. I’ve not seen all the results but I do know we had category wins for Robyn Ellis and Ann Lovell, well done to you both.

Westbury Wipeout

I mentioned it last week, but I’ll mention it again today. The Westbury Wipeout is being held on the evening of Monday 4th July and we need as many volunteers as possible. If you can help on the day please respond to Kay Ridgwell’s facebook post dated 8th June, or let me know via e-mail.

Also there will be no senior training that evening so what more of an excuse do you need to help out!

Club Supper Reminder Thursday 23rd June

Just a quick reminder that we have the Club Supper (chilli & rice) at The Duck, Stoke Lane, on Thursday 23rd June at 8:15pm. £7.50 per person, payment to Lou. She needs to give the pub numbers by next Monday so please respond with a ‘Yes’ if planning to attend to her facebook post, dated 13 June, or let me know via my e-mail address.

Man (& woman) V Horse

Well done to all the Westbury runners at this years Man V Horse. It’s not an easy race with some very challenging and technical off road terrain. This year it was the women in the club that excelled with a team relay and age category win. Katie Hughes was competing as part of the relay and provided the following race report.

Around 6 weeks ago over a coffee in Ashton Court Sophie Voller asked Catherine Treble and myself if we would be interested in running Man v Horse with her as part of a relay if she transferred her solo entry to a team one. We both leapt at the chance to take part in this legendary event and “Mums Day Out” was formed and my weekly training scheduled tweaked to include some serious off road hills. As a race it did not disappoint well organised, friendly, stunning scenery, TOUGH terrain and just such fun. Being a competitive crew we took it reasonably seriously and won the Ladies Team Relay!

Katie picture below, in full flight!

There were lots of other hardy Harriers there running the full distance (massive kudos) and Trish Robson won an age category prize too.

Icing on the cake was that a man (Ricky Lightfoot) beat the horse this has only happened on two previous occasions in the 40 years the event has been running – epic!!

Success for Seamus

The club has a lot of talented youngsters, one of which is Seamus Robinson. Seamus Robinson took double gold in the U18  800m and 1500m at the Northern Ireland T&F Championships this weekend (pictured wearing the vest of his Irish club – City Of Derry Spartans) .

Seamus has also just been selected to represent the Republic of Ireland at an upcoming U18 international meet in Paris

Strava Segment of the Week

Well done to Chris Lowe who was up with the Lark this morning for an easy 60 minute run. While on his run he picked up a Strava Local Legend for segment Round the bend.
