Informal Training: On Monday 23rd December there will be an informal run, starting 7pm from Coombe Dingle Sports Centre (or just outside if the gates are closed). This is not an official club training night so check facebook for more details.
I’m sure there will also be lots of other informal training sessions over the Christmas break. In fact if you’re going for a run and fancy some company let us know via facebook. I’m sure there will be a few of us keen to burn off the Quality Street over the holidays.
South West XC Championships. A scenic race comprising flat sections, as well as a few proper hills. The location is Aldon Hill, Yeovil on Sunday 5th January 2020. But it is important to note that entries must be submitted by the Monday 23rd December! Athletes enter themselves but entrance fees can be claimed back through he club using our expenses system.
The English National Cross Country Championships An announcement has already been e-mailed but it is worth repeating here. It is on Saturday 22nd Feb in Nottingham. Please let your team manager know if you wish to run as entries close Wednesday 8th January. The club pays your entry fee.
The club have a coach going – this is open to all athletes, parents, coaches and supporters. Cost £10 per person. The coach will be leaving from Coombe Dingle with an additional pick up North of Bristol (for those living in Yate/Thornbury areas). We will arrive in time for the first event we have runners in and leave after the senior men’s. We would really like to encourage people to use the coach – makes it a fun club day out and saves you all the drive.
If you would potentially like a space on the coach please let Tamsin Chick know firstname.lastname@example.org 07855445004. TEAM MANAGERS, Neil Miller: boys, Jayne Pemble/Jason Michael: Girls, Tamsin Chick: Women, Scott Campbell: Men
Club Supper. As these have been such a massive success the club suppers will be back for 2020. As soon as I have the dates you will be first the know, but they’ll be roughly once a month. You should all know the rules now about booking, payments, etc but if you don’t I’ll remind you all when I have the first supper night date.

Club Championship. In January I’ll provide you with an update of the current standings but if you’re interested in scoring some additional points there are still a few more events to go before the season ends. The remaining events for 2019 are below, for 2020 see calendar section:
On Boxing Day we have Clevedon AC hosting this 4 mile race at the Little Harp on the seafront. Advance entries have now closed but some entries will be available on the day from the Race HQ between 8:15 and 10:30am.
Then, on Sunday 29th December we have the Wye Wander. This is an off road race of about 5.5 miles with the race HQ at Chepstow Leisure Centre. You can enter online (see link in diary dates below) or on the day.
Club Training. Formal club training recommences on Monday 6th January
Scott Campbell, the big 100! He can’t be that old you cry! Of course not but he was celebrating his 100th parkrun at Ashton Court. Well done Scott, here’s to the next 100!
We had a huge turnout for the Weston Prom. This may have had something to do with the fact that it was the last Prom race before Xmas, valuable Club Championships points were on offer and it was followed by a Christmas Meal. I certainly worked up an appetite and thirst after charging up and down the seafront three times. For each lap I celebrated afterwards with a corresponding number of nice cold pints of Guinness, a fantastic post race recovery drink.
I won’t go into all the results as there were 27 (+1) Westbury runners. One Westbury member was running in the guise of Nailsea and because of this Santa is having a long-hard-think to see if they are deserving of presents this year! Some of the highlights include:
Matt Ellis, Colin Pemble, Mike Mewse and Robyn Ellis all with second place category wins. Matt, Robyn and Mike were even saving themselves for events on the Sunday. I’m sure if they were going full gas it would have been first place wins.
Rhiannon Paton also had a fantastic run as on the final lap she seemed to find an extra gear overtaking numerous runners on the home straight for a third place category win, 4th place female.
Finally good luck to Robyn and Matt who will both be in Pompey on Sunday. They will be running the Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon. This is a multi-terrain event around Langstone Harbour, taking in Hayling Island, Farlington Marshes and finishing near the South Parade Pier in Portsmouth.
Interesting Running Joke of the Week. As it’s Christmas I thought we could all do with a Christmas cracker joke instead of the usual fact or training tip.
I went into a sports shop the other day and picked up a pair of running shoes. The assistant asked if I needed any help and I said, “ I wondered if these were for over-pronators”. The assistant replied, “No sir, they’re for runners”.
Editor’s Note: I’ll be in Denmark over Christmas so will be taking a break from the Weekly News next week.
