Weekly News – Monday 6th January 2020

Club Training

Back to normal training this week. The first club training session is this evening from Coombe Dingle Sports Centre. Our timekeeping is starting to slip again so please be ready to run for 7pm.
Effort sessions will also be recommencing this Thursday 9th January, again we will start from Coombe Dingle Sports Centre at 7pm. I’m not quite sure what session is planned, but do check Facebook as there may be details nearer the time.

Club Supper

These are back for 2020 and the first will be on Monday 20th January, 8pm at the Black Swan. Do let Louise know if you’re attending (via Facebook) and £6 is to be paid before the event. It’s a chicken casserole and a three bean cassoulet. Either via bank transfer or direct to Louise on a Monday night.

Upcoming Events

The English National Cross Country Championships. An announcement has already been e-mailed but it is worth repeating here. It is on Saturday 22nd February in Nottingham. Please let your team manager know if you wish to run as entries close on Wednesday.
Bristol 10K and Bristol Half Marathon. Please remember that you can enter these events through the club with a discount. The club will also put you in a draw and you may be lucky enough to enter for free. The Bristol 10k is taking place on Sunday 3rd May and the club will provide details of how to enter nearer the time.
British Masters Athletics. Masters athletics is for runners over 35 years of age. This last year Westbury Harriers men and women masters (also known as veterans) have had success in local, county, regional, national and international races. The highlight has been the international success of Nigel, Anthony, Vicky and Katie.

Athletes are encouraged to join area associations and there are individual and team competitions.

The standings, as of 29th December (excluding Gwent’s as these are scored once the league ends).

Women. Kay, with 323 points is currently the leader and Judy, the current champion, with 234 has some catching up to do. In third place we have Eithne (202 points) and in fourth Ann with 93 points.
Mrn. Ian currently leads the men with 305 points but Ewan is catching up very quickly indeed with 294 points. Not far behind in third place we have Tim with 284 points and the current champion, Trevor in 4th place with 211 points.

Only a few more events to go before the season ends. Although the Riverbank Rollick is full a few places are become available as some runners are having to drop out due to injuries and sickness. Check our own Facebook site as well as the Riverbank Rollick Facebook site for possible spaces.

The Saturday Water Tower Runners. One last selfie before heading over to Leigh Woods.

We had the South West XC Championships taking place yesterday at Aldon Hill, Yeovil. Good luck to Tamsin, Elaine, Alex, Oli and lots of others. I’m sure all the results will be published on Facebook soon.
