Club Supper

Reminder. Monday 17th February. 8pm – Black Swan. £6 cash or on-line transfer to Louise before the event please. Chilli (meat & veggie options). 24 WH’s signed up so far thank you, but there’s room for more, spread the word. Will be another great evening, don’t miss out, check your diaries and let Lou know if you’re coming (she’ll be at training today).

Thursday Interval Session

For a change we will be running on one of the fields at Coombe Dingle Sport Centre. The session will be 4 sets of 4 x 1 minute intervals with an optional 4 minute tempo session to finish. If you have grippy shoes, do wear them and it may be useful to bring a running light/head-torch. If the field is really waterlogged there will be a road alternative. If this is the case details will be on Facebook nearer the time.

Monday Training Announcements 7pm

Just a reminder that announcements will be prompt at 7pm and groups will run straight after. Try not to be late otherwise we may have to leave without you! Thanks.

Training

Marathon Training. For those prepping for marathons, or just fancy a long run the club are organising a Bristol to Bath training session. We plan to meet at 9.45 a.m in order to be running by 10 a.m on Saturday 15th February. After navigating through the city centre, we will join the Bristol to Bath cycle path for a calm and fairly flat run into the historic Georgian city of Bath.

If you, friend or family would be willing to drive and transport runners kit then it would be appreciated. Please let Lizzy know via coaching@westburyharriers.co.uk.

Social Runs

Welsh Coast Path- Good Bye to Anglesey. Finally we say good bye to Anglesey and start to head for the finish. Picking up where we left off at Benllech. The plan is to run to the Menai Bridge on the Saturday. Travel up on Friday. Rent an Airbnb for the Fri/Sat nights. Then run onto Conway on the Sunday. The event takes place from 14-16th February.

The Water Tower Runners, due to ongoing renovations at the Downs Cafe, the runners started from the Brackenwood Garden Centre on Saturday (I even picked up some bargain priced cacti while I was there). Two groups formed, one going further afield, taking on some open countryside, the other group focused their run in the woodlands around Leigh Woods and some sections of the tow path.

The Leighwood group ran approximately 12K and many thanks to Richard for leading and route planning. Some steep climbs, lots of mud and a few new paths that many of us had never run before.
The second group headed towards Wraxall, running near the Tyntesfield NT property, a distance of about 18K. Thanks to Chris for planning this route.

We all regrouped at the garden centre cafe and enjoyed coffee and cake. The Saturday runs are very sociably,  relaxed, with lots of selfies being taken and occasionally a play on a rope swing. More importantly nobody gets left behind. Usually we have two groups, splitting into a long and short option. Routes are predominantly trail based. Although we have many Westbury runners taking part the event is open to everybody so if you have friends and family who enjoy running they are welcome to come along.

The two groups from Saturday, pictured below.

Congratulations

Well done to Chris who on Saturday ran a race called Icing on the Cake. This was a trail event held in Church Stretton, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Chris tells us he experienced a constant headwind, even though the course was a large loop! Now that’s what I call unlucky.
Well done to Edward who was guiding Dianne at the Longleat 10k yesterday. A twisty course with quite a lot of runners to contend with , good running from you both.

And get ready to start your engines because Robyn and Matt were running the Chichester 10k at Goodwood. The event starts in Chichester and finishes with a complete lap of Goodwood Motor Circuit. Fantastic running by you both. Update: Matt finished well under the Masters England V40 qualification time of 34:00, great result.

If you’ve run a race over the weekend, don’t be shy and let us know. We all would love to know what you’ve been involved in, especially as it encourages us to try different events. Feel free to send an e-mail to communication@westburyharriers.co.uk or post a brief summary on the Westbury Harriers Facebook page.

Training Tip of the Week

If you are a distance runner, you may think you don’t need to focus on speed. Studies suggest otherwise. Increasing speed reserve promotes stiffer tendons, longer muscle fibre bundles and better neuromuscular signalling – developments associated with more efficient running at slower speeds. So why not come along to a Thursday Intervals session, it will help your upcoming marathons. Extract taken from March 2020 issue of Runner’s World.
