Contributions Welcome. If you’ve competed in an interesting race, discovered a new route or just have an interesting running related story to tell, please feel free to contribute.
I also struggle at times to find an interesting ‘Fact of the Week’, (how I wish I’d called it ‘Fact of the Month’). If you have a running related fact, please send it in. Perhaps we can offer a prize for the most interesting and quirky fact of the year?
Contributions can be submitted to ‘email@example.com‘
Summer Garden Lunch Party. The Summer Garden Party is taking place next weekend on Sunday 7th July, from noon. Informal buffet lunch, just BYO and a chair. Hopefully you’ve all shown your interest to Louise Pretty. This is so she has an idea of numbers for catering.
Nomination. The committee will be meeting this coming Friday which will be our chance to discuss junior and senior member of the month. Do you have a nomination to make? If so, let us know, to ‘member.of.the.month@westburyharriers. co.uk’
Move up Monday. As it’s the first Monday of the month you have the opportunity to move up a group. If you feel like trying a different group, discuss it with a group leader.
Tintern Trot – Road Closure. I’ve just checked Google Maps and the Tintern road is still closed. I recommend leaving just a bit earlier to factor in the diversion.

GWR Towpath Series 10k. Race 3 of the series takes place on Friday 5th July. Then the Mob Match follows, on Friday 19th July and the race 5, the last in the series (5K only) on Friday 9th August.
Race Review – Easy Runner 5k Summer Series. I’ve not written a race review for a while now, and as I’m a little out of the habit it will be a short one this week, only 5k in fact!
The Easy Runner 5k Series is a set of 5k races, held along the fast and very flat Bristol to Bath cycle track, hosted by Bitton Road Runners. Like last year it is part of our own Club Championships and this summer the event takes place on Wednesday 10th July, registration from 6:30pm.
It’s strange really, you may be running an ultra of 100 miles, or a short 5k race, but it’s always that last little bit that really hurts. The Easy Runner 5k is no exception.
The race starts from the old Bitton Railway Station and I advise you get yourself in a good position on the starting grid as the first couple of kilometres are quite ‘cosy’. With such a short distance, you don’t want to be fighting your way through the crowds at the beginning.
Due to a combination of feeling fresh, over-enthusiasm and a slight downward gradient, the first 5k are fast and furious. It’s not long before you get to the midpoint, brake hard, and a sharp 180 degree turn around the traffic cone.
Now only 2.5k to the finish line. How hard can that be, it will be over in less than 10 minutes? Well, it proves very painful indeed, perhaps setting off so quickly was not such a good idea! A little bit slower this time, although I’m using the excuse I had to give way to the odd cyclist or two!
If you’ve not yet done a club champ event perhaps give this one a try? It’s only short, so a good introduction to our club champs, and if you’re new to racing starting towards the rear of the bunch means things are a little more relaxed. We always have a good turnout of Westbury runners so there will be someone you know.
In terms of admin it is worth noting that registration takes place at the Oldland Abbotonians Football Club BS30 9SZ. The entrance, Castle Road, is just off the main road (between a Chinese Chip Shop and Post Office), down a very narrow track, so watch out for oncoming cars. The race then starts from Bitton Station, which is a short jog from registration. Don’t go directly to the start thinking you can register there.
I hope to see you all on the 5th.

Well done to everybody that ran in the Cotswold Relay on Saturday. It was a tough one I imagine, having to run on the hottest day we’ve had this year. Good luck also to Robyn Ester Ellis who will be running the Woolacombe Coastal Marathon tomorrow (Sunday), described as the toughest and most beautiful race in the UK.
Fact of the Week. Fauja Singh is the oldest marathon runner in the world. His personal best time for a marathon at the age 90 plus category was in 2003, when he competed in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 5 hours 40 minutes, at the impressive age of 92. Wikipedia
