Tick Awareness. With many of us using the good weather as an excuse to take to the trails it is worth being aware of ticks. Ticks can transmit bacteria that cause diseases such as Lyme disease, this can be very serious if left untreated. Some simple steps to avoid bites are:

  • walk on clearly defined paths
  • avoid dense vegetation
  • use repellants such as DEET
  • Perform a tick check

If you develop a circular rash, feel fatigued, have muscle/ joint pain or develop flu-like symptoms, contact your GP or dial NHS 111.

World Half Marathon Championships, Gydnia, Poland. Sunday 29th March.  It has become a tradition that members of Westbury attend the biannual Half Marathon Championships. Last time it was in Valencia, in 2020 it will be Gydnia (near Gdansk, Poland).

There are direct flights out from Bristol to nearby Gdansk (currently Monday 16:20 and Friday 06:40, returning Monday 14:20 and Friday 10:30. Last time many club members made a short holiday of it, combining the running with plenty of sightseeing (and drinking!).

If interested, please let Richard Hughes know (his Facebook posting was on 3rd May) and he will provide further details.

Hamburg Marathon. Sunday 19th April. A few Westbury runners have signed up for the Hamburg Marathon. Flights are available from Birmingham, currently Thursday or Friday 07:00, returning either Monday 22:15 or Thursday 10:20. Some may make a short holiday of it and fly out the Friday, returning the Thursday. After my last marathon I couldn’t walk the following day, so a few days to recover may be sensible!

Please show your interest via the Events section on facebook, which will be added soon.

Hogweed Trot. Just a reminder that the Hogweed Trot, a club championship event and Avon County Championship 10k is on Monday 27th May.  There are medals for all finishers and the Hogweed Trotters are arranging pace makers from sub 40 mins to sub 1 hour. The participant list is already up to 383 runners so entry is likely to close soon.

Congratulations. Some impressive running by both the men and women at Saturday’s British Open Masters Road Relays. The event was held at Sutton Park, a picturesque venue, running through open parkland and woods. Each leg was only 5k long, although I caveat the ‘only’ by stating the first couple of km’s involved a deceptively evil climb.

Many thanks to Tamsin and Mike for organising the teams. Also, an extra big thank-you to Mike Mewse for not only making up the V35 team at short notice, but also persuading the officials to allow it.

Mike Mewse has also provided the following update. A good day for the men although we didn’t reach the heights of the ladies’ performances. Highlight for the men was another top class run from Oli Beale (V40) who is in a rich vein of form and recorded an excellent 16.29 on the first leg for the V35 team. Chris Palmer also recorded a fine 18.28.

V35 Team – Oli Beal, Chris Palmer, Tim Clothier, Ian Gawinowski, Matt Lavis, Mike Mewse
Rich Noble’s hard training paid off as he ran well in the V45 team, recording 18.46 on the hilly course.
V45 Team – Richard Noble, Ewan Paton, Andy Marshall, Ian Derrick.
Good atmosphere and a great team spirit – Well done Men ! Full results and photos will be posted on Facebook and are available on the Run Britain website.

Photo. Jayne at the Masters, making it all look too easy ( I only wish I could look so photogenic!)

And the men, all ready to race.

New Club Champ Event!!!!!

Wednesday 21st August Crook Peak Cake Race. This race is held every year on the Wednesday before the late summer bank holiday. It is run under the Fell Runners Association rules, but don’t worry about getting lost as it’s only 3 miles long.  I’m going to warn you though, it may be short but the climb is near vertical and on the decent you’re likely to take flight. It is so called the ‘Cake Race’ because the winner gets to take home a massive cake. It is an off road race so trail shoes are recommended.

The venue is the White Hart, Axbridge, Somerset, BS26 2EE but don’t get there too late because it’s a bit of a walk to the start line. Registration is between 18:15 to 18:45, start gun goes off at 19:00.  Crook Peak Link
