Weekly News – Tuesday 9th January 2024

Happy New Year!

This year is a significant year for the club as it celebrates its centenary.

The club was founded on February 8th, 1924, and the first of our celebrations will take place on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, with a club supper at the White Lion in Westbury-on-Trym. Why the White Lion? Well, that’s where the club was formed 100 years ago. Details on how to book will follow soon.

Other centenary dates for your diaries are, Saturday May 18th (formal dinner), weekend of June 22nd/23rd all club event.

Thank you Ian

At the very bottom of the last newsletter, you’ll have seen that our newsletter editor and communications officer Ian Gawinowski has made the decision to step down from the role after around four years.

On behalf of the committee and the entire club I’d like to thank Ian for producing such high quality and entertaining newsletters over this time period.

What does this mean for the newsletter going forwards? It’s an opportunity for someone else to take on the role and put their stamp on it as Ian did. It’s an important communication method for the club and if you feel that it’s something you’d like to take on, or be part of a team to produce it, please get in touch with Geraint Torrington.

Thank you Richard

The Wednesday hill sessions have been a popular midweek session for many members of the club with Richard Hughes devising many routes and keeping statistics of the participating runners.

Richard has decided to step down from leading this group so thank you from the entire club for starting this training session.

It’s not the end of the sessions though with some other leaders looking to carry them on. Keep a lookout on Facebook for the session details.

Members of the month for December

The December members of the month are both for performances at the Tri-counties Cross Country Championships that took place in Bath on Sunday, December 10th.

Your senior member of the month is Dan Summers who is the Avon Masters 40 XC champion. Dan also helps with the club’s Academy, regularly helping out with the groups.

And our junior member of the month and Avon Under 20 XC champion is Katie Ramsden. Katie has stepped up to run with the seniors in the Gwent League races this year too.

Congratulations to both athletes. If you want to nominate a member of the month, send an email to member.of.the.month@westburyharriers.co.uk
