Westbury Harriers Weekly News

Hello,

Wow what a weekend we just had, not only was the sun out but we had lots of Westbury men and women in action all around the country and abroad! We had twelve Harriers at the London Marathon, a large mob at the Berkeley 10k (club championship) race, a couple at the Horton Bull run and Ben Rawlins and Mathew Cant at the European Triathlon/Duathlon Championships in Poland.

On to the news…

RACE REPORTS

There was a little race going on in London….

Fantastic to see the results coming in from The London Marathon. Hopefully we can get some race reports from the runners once they have recovered. What I will say is running a marathon in warm conditions is tough. So well done to everyone for just completing that.

Well done to Phil Houghton who was our fastest runner in 3:03 and HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Sandy masters who only went and won her age category! Unbelievable. Bravo Sandy!

As it’s now silly season (marathons) well done to Mark Statter, Joe Addison, James Lawrence and Becca Hucket at the Newport Marathon on the 19th. Some great times there, and Mark grabbed a sub 3 result!

Berkeley 10K – Sunday 27th April

It was a great morning for a gentle cycle ride to watch the club championship race at Berkeley. Well done to those who turned in some good times on a warm Gloucestershire Spring morning.

David Tonkin was our first man home in 36.45 with Chris Palmer in 37.02 and fast improving Under 20 James Lawrence (a week after his Marathon) our 3rd finisher in 38.20.

For the ladies Sophie Voller was our first lady finisher in 40.51 with Kate Hoffen 47.55 and Judy Knights 49.43.

Plenty of prizes as well as the Men and Women both won the team events, and were rewarded with wine!

Well done to everyone.

Horton Bull run

Well done to Anthony Glover and Debbie Cleary winning their respective categories at the Horton Bull run on the weekend.

Ben Rawlins and Mathew Cant podium at European champs.

Well done to Ben Rawlins and Mathew Cant, who earned Gold and Bronze at the European Duathlon championships in Poland. (Ben ran a 15.46 5km before jumping on his bike). Well done boys!

CLUB NEWS AND REMINDERS

Wednesday Midday Hill Reps:

Please note that in future, the meet point for these sessions is changed to Savile Rd junction, in front of the Downs Cafe. We will try to spot people who have headed to the traffic lights on autopilot, but the cafe is a bit more straightforward as a meet point, especially as many of us end up afterwards there anyway!

COTSWOLD WAY RELAY

The Cotswold Way relay is taking place on Sat 5th July. This is a very popular race which follows the route of the Cotswold Way from Chipping Camden to Bath. The relay consists of 10 sections varying in distance from 7 to 13 miles, mostly off road, hilly and very scenic. I have entered three teams so looking for 30 participants. All abilities welcome. Please see me at club or email  me if you wish to run or would like more information about taking part.

Currently oversubscribed.

Thanks, Eithne

Full race information can be accessed here: www.cotswoldwayrelay.co.uk

STILL LOOKING – New club treasurer needed:

The club urgently needs a club treasurer, it’s a role we cannot do without. The role involves looking after the Westbury Harriers bank account , paying expenses and invoices and reporting on the club’s finances. If this is something you could do then please get in touch. To find out more please contact Judy to discuss. Treasurer@westburyharriers.co.uk

Club Championship

The Nailsea Beer n banger race has now been added to this years club championship roster. It’s a great summer race, and as the name suggests, you get a beer and a sausage! (and this year chips!)

For anyone interested, there are also a few orienteering events coming up locally. On Saturday 3rd May, there is a forest event at Blaise Castle with courses suitable for all ages. It’s organised by Hannah and Iain Large, and we’ve kindly been able to use the WH pavilion (thank you!) Do come along and give it a go. Starts from 10.30-12.30 so you could even combine with Parkrun!

The Bristol Urban Orienteering Series also kicks off this month. There are events most weeks on Wednesday evenings but WH members may be particularly interested in the University Halls/Sneyd Park event on 23rd April and the Coombe Dingle event on 4th June. If you’re new to orienteering, use the link on the flyer to claim your first race free. No equipment needed and there will be people around at the start to talk you through how it all works if you haven’t done it before.
