Weekly News
Hello, hope everyone has had a good week, what a change the clocks going back makes – with it getting dark earlier in the evenings I’ll take the opportunity for a quick reminder about hi-viz/lights etc for our evening sessions.
Some reports and club notices below – happy running everyone!
Halloween Run
Huge thankyou to Richard Hughes for organising this years Halloween run. Report from Richard –
17 brave souls took to the night trails earlier in great running conditions. A relatively successful run as most returned.
The costume committee were unanimous in awarding best costume to the runaway bride – aka Kento Taoka.
The runners enjoyed the spooky refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards.
Thanks to Sandra Williams for helping to organise, decorate and the trophy and also to Anneke Bull and Sandra Sforza for helping us decorate the clubhouse for the occasion – you’d hardly recognise it!
Baby News from Olivia Zeltner – Congratulations!
The newest member of Westbury Harriers, Bernard “Bernie” Lawrence Grigg, arrived at 23:23 on 15th October weighing 8lbs 11oz.
Myself (Olivia) and Bernie are both healthy and doing really well so far. As the xc captain and newly appointed baby co-captain, we cannot wait to support the cross country this season. If all continues to go smoothly we will be at the Cardiff Gwent league cheering everyone on!

XMAS PROM MEAL – Thursday 19th December:
UPDATE from Sarah Andrews
Brunello Lounge on Beach Road have accepted our booking at 8:50pm. It’s not a ‘traditional Xmas meal’ it’s tapas so I’ll understand if people want to pull out. Please let me know as soon as possible either way. It’s £22:50 for two courses, £27:50 for three.
Please let Sarah know if you’re happy with this. If not she will refund your deposit. For those who have not booked and paid the deposit there still may be spaces available, especially if people drop out. Please get in touch with Sarah if you are interested in joining the meal.
Cardiff Gwent League
The second Gwent League fixture is on Saturday 9th November 2024 at Llandaff Fields, Cardiff.
Please see fixture information for course map, timetable, parking information and the Cross Challenge https://www.gwent-league.org.uk/fixtures.html
So whether you run in group 2 or 5, are an U23 or a V65+ – we would love to have you supporting the team. Remember everyone scores for the team (first 5 for the A team, 2nd 5 for the B team etc), then you score for your age group team and all those age groups teams below you and you score as an individual. The more Westbury we have the more points we get as a club.
Whatever else you are training for, cross country builds stamina and strength, a joy of racing people rather than times and being part of a fun and friendly team. PLEASE SIGN UP ON RUNTOGETHER BY 8/11/24
If you raced at the last fixture please remember your number. If you didn’t race at Pembrey – your number will be in the folder marked senior ladies on the table in the club tent.
This fixture incorporates the Cardiff Cross Challenge – https://cardiffcrosschallenge.co.uk/
For information, entering the Cross Challenge is most suitable for those runners who are group 1 or 2 pace. Any questions about the X Challenge do ask Tamsin.
GWENT XC LEAGUE – BLAISE:
With the start of the Gwent League season at Pembrey Country Park, it is time for me to start organising the volunteers for the Blaise Castle event, on Saturday 30th November.
I know that a lot of you will be running, but we would greatly appreciate your help in volunteering to ensure the continual success of the event. We need > 20 marshals out on the course at any one point, with some people floating / able to respond if needed.
With regards to this, approximate volunteering times are noted below, and if you can volunteer please let me know which slots you could do.
These slots are likely to change when the full timetable is released later by the Gwent League Organising Committee.
Volunteering Slots:
1. Early Setup: 09:00 -> ~11:00
2. Early Marshall: ~11:00 -> ~13:45
3. Late Marshall: ~13:45 -> ~16:00
4. Late Cleardown: ~16:00 onwards
5. Club House: Time to be agreed on at a later date, but expected to be the following day / week.
As usual, all timings will be thought out such that you won’t miss your race and have time to warmup and cooldown.
Please email Alastair if you would like to be added to the list.
