Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

It was in the news this weekend that film director, Hugh Hudson, died at the age of 86. He directed the best picture Oscar winner Chariots of Fire, a film based on the true story of two British athletes, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams , both of whom competed in the 1924 olympics.

Admittedly the film does show it’s age as it came out in the 80’s but it’s still worth a watch with some big names including Nigel Havers, John Gielgud and Kenneth Branagh and of course music by Vangelis.

In fact I recreated my own version of those olympics with a few laps of the cinder track at Beachley, near Chepstow! I don’t recommend it though, it really has seen better days.

Tuesday Running at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals

The Yate session on Tuesday will probably include a short and long option, or perhaps even just do your own thing? It’s really up to you.

Mixing it up for Thursday with a road session. Location will be confirmed nearer the time as it depends on numbers but options may include the Glenavon and Elmlea loops. Wear your bright running gear and put on those road shoes.

Bristol Track Club 5km, 7th April

I’ve just had an e-mail reminder we have less than 2 months to go until the fastest 5k in the south west. Apparently it will be bigger than ever with multiple waves of seeded races with pacers, liver commentary, music, entertainment and food vans. 5K race for the seniors and a 3k for the juniors. https://www.bristoltrackclub.com/

Monday lunchtime Intervals Cancelled.

Just a reminder because it’s half term there won’t be the usual Monday lunchtime interval session with Tamsin.

Sri Chinmoy Races

I’ve also had an e-mail from the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Races (Bristol) held in Eastville Park, Bristol each year.

He tells me they have a Senior Race Series of three 2 mile races and a Junior Race Series of three 1 mile races. Plus, an ‘Ice Cream’ Relay (3 x 1 mile) where every runner gets a free ice cream at the end of the race.

Quite often one of the races will be part of the our club championship series too. More details available using the link below. https://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/races/bristol

Forest of Dean Spring Trails Half Marathon, 2nd April

My in-box has been bursting because the race director for the FoD spring half marathon has also been in contact with me. I’ve done both the spring and autumn events and can recommend them, especially if you enjoy running through well maintained forest trails, and it’s relatively flat.

You’ve guessed it, another link with more details. https://www.forestofdean-halfmarathon.co.uk/spring_trails/index.php

Club Championship Results

I promised Judy I would publish the club championship results last week and failed miserably. Here are the latest standings, although they will be updated very soon once yesterday’s Gwent cross country results have been compiled.

Gwent Cross Country League, Margam Park 11th February

Well done to all that ran in yesterday’s cross country league, apparently it was proper muddy XC conditions. It was a case of both quantity and quality for the women with a big turnout, no doubt in part thanks to Tamsin’s organisational skills.

Not quite so many chaps running, but those that did put in some impressive results on a tough 9.8k course.

A full race report will be out soon but here are a few photos.

Race Roundup

Anyway else doing anything race related this weekend that was not a Gwent cross country? If you did let me know, or perhaps just an update on how your marathon or half marathon training is going? Please, I need something to report in the newsletter!

Wednesday Evening Social Run – Bristol Light Festival

Mark Andrews reports, ‘A really different Wednesday run this week with our tour of the lights!

Our group only missed one display and only got lost once (or was it twice!). Some interesting displays and plenty of photo opportunities.

Trail Running Weekend 29th Sept – 1st Oct in the Peak District

Dan Summers apologises for taking so long in confirming the trail running weekend but says it has taken time finding the right accommodation. This year the running weekend will be from 29 Sept to 1 Oct based in the Peak District (almost certainly Edale) for £250. In order to reserve your space you need to pay a £100 deposit and for more details, including banking information either message Dan Summers or e-mail, adventureawaitsuk@icloud.com.

Strava Segment of the Week

Well done to Abby Hilado who ran an amazing marathon at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. On route to completing her marathon she achieved 17 Strava segments including Goodwood run circuit in a time of 20:30
