Sunday 12th December

Westbury Harriers – Weekly News

Editors Piece

Only a couple of weeks to go now to the big day! After the Saturday morning Watertower run I had a very lazy afternoon decorating the artificial Christmas tree and putting up my outside lights so I’m now all ready for Christmas.

This coming week looks to be a busy one too. Monday we have the traditional Brailsford Lights run, then Thursday we have the Weston Prom, followed by the Christmas meal. On Saturday I plan to make a start on my Treasure Hunt and Sunday I’ll need to dig out my costume for the Weston Christmas Cracker.

Club Intervals and Yate Track Sessions

There will be a Yate track session this Tuesday and then again the following Tuesday (21st December). Nicola is still working on the session and this will be published on Facebook shortly.

The club will NOT be having a formal interval session at Coombe Dingle this Thursday because of the Weston Prom/Christmas meal.

If you are unable to make the Prom, then Vicky has helpfully suggested an alternative tempo effort instead.

10mins out 2-3mins jog recovery 10mins back, try and keep the effort consistent, aim is on the way back to make it back to your start point, good one to do down the Portway (as long as not windy!). On the way back make sure you remember where you finished the first 10mins and start from there. Finish off with 6 x 30secs (30secs recovery) if want to do a tempo effort then a shorter option of 6 x 2mins (1min recoveries) 6 x 1mins (1min recoveries) 6 x 30secs (30secs recoveries).

Christmas Treasure Hunt

Naturally, as we’re fast approaching Christmas it needs to be a festive special so the ‘somethings’ have a Christmas theme. Plus I’m pleased to report we have some Up and Running vouchers for the winner.  As with all competitions there are a few rules to follow to ensure it’s fair for everyone, and these are listed in the rules section. Sarah and I are already looking forward to selecting the winner, good luck!

The Christmas treasure hunt is here!! Right you need to walk, cycle, scoot or run to find the following:

Theme Guess the Christmas film.

‘Somethings’ A festive scene, a Christmas tree, Mistletoe (extra point for berries), Holly (extra point if it has berries), a Robin, Christmas lights, a snowman, a reindeer (doesn’t have to have a red nose), a seasonal selfie (bonus points for wearing Christmas fancy dress), a Christmas jumper.

The Rules. 1. All photographs must be taken in December 2021, while on your walk, cycle, scoot or run. 2. Only one photo submission for each ‘something’. 3. The theme can involve multiple images, although only one film is allowed. 4. A ‘Cut and paste’ from the internet is not allowed. 5. To be eligible for the prize you must be a paid up member of Westbury Harriers. 6. The judges are Sarah and Ian. Their decision will be final. No appeals. 7. First prize will be an Up and Running voucher. 8. Treasure Hunt submissions are via the Westbury Harrier chat facebook page or e-mail to communication@westburyharriers.co.uk.9. All somethings and themes must be submitted in a single facebook posting or e-mail (this will make it easier for Sarah and I to judge the entries). 10. Competition opens Thursday 9th December. 11. Competition closes Sunday 26th December. 12. Winner will be notified the following week in the Weekly News.

Brailsford Lights and Black Swan Christmas Buffet

Don’t forget on Monday all groups will be heading out to the Brailsford Lights so worth bringing a card/change to make a charitable donation at the house.

Some of you that have booked the buffet will then be going on afterwards to eat at the Black Swan from 8pm.

Chepstow Harrier Events

If you fancy the short crossing over the bridge Chepstow Harriers are putting on a few events. On January 23rd we have the Winter Speedway 10k which takes place near Beachley army barracks. It’s a very flat, two lap course. It’s for fast runners and even those going under 40mins may not be guaranteed a place. As we head into the summer we have a couple of events which are suitable for all levels of runners.

The Tintern Trot is probably the best 10k trail run in the country, in the heart of the stunning Wye Valley, and it is on the evening of Thursday 7th July.

Finally we have the Magor 10k on Saturday 30th July. Again, this is a a very flat circuit and the organiser says it’s the flattest and fastest road 10k in Wales. If you are looking for a PB this is the place to get it. The course is on scenic country lanes and suits both experienced and beginner runners alike.
