Westbury Harriers – Weekly News ‘Christmas Special’

Editors Piece

Can it be really true, is it only 148 days until Christmas! I’m looking forward to a white Christmas although the weather forecast is saying it’s too mild for snow in the south, perhaps because it currently about 19 Celsius! I also need to start thinking about my Christmas shopping as it’s always good to beat the rush.

You can make a start in booking up some Christmas races. I’ve already seen plenty of Weston AC Christmas Cracker running T-shirts which is a good reminder that this years race is due to take place on Sunday 10th December. A great event with a festive T-shirt and a mince pie at the end. You can enter the event today for £18, see link below. https://race-nation.co.uk/register/weston-ac/christmas-cracker-2023

Another event many of you take part in is the Clevedon Boxing Day Race on Tuesday 26th December. The junior race is 2km at 10:15 and the seniors run 4 miles at 11:00. Entry not yet open but you can see the race details in the link below. https://clevedonac.co.uk/our-races/boxing-day-race/

There’s the Mental Elf Festive Fun Run for Bristol Mind. The run is taking place on the 3rd December at Ashton Court and all runners are encouraged to dress up as Christmas Elves. Details to follow.

Finally, taking place over the winter months, starting normally around September we have the Dave Jones Weston Prom Run Series. Details of the series of 5 mile races will be on the Weston AC website nearer the time.

And remember, be good little boys and girls, otherwise Santa may not be coming down your chimney this year. Ho, ho, ho!

I have one important apology to make. In last week’s newsletter I missed a result from the Age Grader so here’s a reminder that Fliss Russell came 51st with an age graded time of 31:11 and a very high AG percentage score of 76.43%

Tuesday Running Session at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals

The Tuesday track session will be advertised on facebook nearer the time.

And for Coombe Dingle on the Thursday, 3 sets of 3mins, 90secs, 45secs – 1 min recovery throughout. Followed by 6 x 20secs (20secs recovery)

Magor 10k – Saturday 29rd July

The Magor 10k is touted as a fast, flat 10k, ideal for achieving some fast times and perhaps even a personal best if you’re feeling good. This event is hosted by Chepstow Harriers and is always popular, especially with many of the Welsh running clubs. In fact, similar to previous years, the event was fully booked week’s in advance and on the day almost 300 runners took part.

As expected with a fast course there were some impressive winning times. Antoinette Dumayne (Lilswerry Runner) took first place for the women in 37:36. Matthew Rees (Swansea Harriers) was the first across the line in 31:55.

Once again it was the Westbury women in the results spotlight. Sandy Masters controller her race perfectly with some lovely even splits through every kilometre and over 30 seconds quicker than her nearest rival to win the 1st place V65 age category in 45:01. Sandy told me she’s relativity new to running so if you’ve never raced before, why not give it a try?  Who knows, perhaps you have the potential of a podium place?

Ann Dockery continues with her winning form. Last week it was a win in the Age Grader and this time it was a V75+ age category win with a magnificent time of 49:19.

Unfortunately there were no individual wins for the Westbury men but they did score third place in the team award with Alex Hamblin leading the four men with a combined time of 2:27:05

Other results. 7th Alex Hamblin 34:26, 15th Paul Gardiner 35:11, 32nd Ben Wood 38:02, 50th Ian Gawinowski 39:26, 94th Benoit Lepron 42:58, 129th Kate Hoffen 47:55, 145th George Pickering 49:10, 149th Heidi Andrews 49:28, 160th Audrey Lachevre 50:07, 188th Felicity Russell 53:49.

Club Championship:  Rose Inn 4 Miler

The next race in the series is the Rose Inn 4 miler on Tuesday 8th August. Plenty of time to get your online entry in for that, just go to the Fabian4 website for details.  Details of the race are in the link below. https://sites.google.com/site/chepstowharriersrunningclub/open-races/rose-inn

Club Championship Results

Updated to include the Age Grader.

Group Run Safety Reminder

The Club would like to remind everyone that your safety is one of our priorities on Club group runs. This is a gentle reminder of some of the expectations around group runs!

Headphones are not to be worn. Group runs are a social occasion as well as a training opportunity but it is essential that you are able to hear the Group Leader’s instructions as well as what is going on around you. You will be asked to remove headphones.

Appropriate clothing for the time of year and light conditions should be worn. Although it is still July, think ahead to those winter months and get the reflective bibs, lights, and white tops ready!

Animals should not be brought to formal Club runs. Unfortunately we don’t yet have animal vests in club colours.

Attend training on time and prepared!

Strava Segment of the Week

Well done to Alison Rogers on her lunch run, with a quick loop of the Down. Alison achieved a second fastest time on Strava segment Bishops Close uphill dash in 1:35.
