Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
Editors Piece
Good luck to those running the Nightingale Nightmare tomorrow. It’s a spooktacular event, a 10k trail race along the towpath, up Nightingale Valley and through Leigh Woods. Fancy dress is almost obligatory so even if you’re not running there’s nothing to stop you dressing up and watching the action. Race starts at 11:00.
PS: Don’t forget the clocks go back so everyone gets an extra hour in bed!
Tuesday Running Session at Yate Track and Thursday Intervals
Tuesday session at Yate Track is shown below, a session with more distance at 5k pace with some shorter intervals thrown in.
Thursday session on the grass at Coombe Dingle: 5mins (90secs rec) – 4mins (1min rec) – 3mins (1min rec) 3mins (1min rec) – 4mins (1min recovery) – 5min.
Option to drop the 5mins to 4mins and 4mins to 3 mins. Aim for 5/10km pace.
Halloween Night Run
I’ve been told the Halloween Night Run through Leigh Woods was a partial success as almost all the runners made it back. Those that were lost have probably been eaten by the woodland creatures by now anyway.
Christmas Meal
Once again a big thanks to Sandra who’s organising the Weston-Super-Mare Christmas meal at the Brewers Fayre again this year. The date will be Thursday 21st December and straight after the Prom Race, 8pm sharp. Please find attached the menu below. Sandra will collect cash payments and meal choices by the 30th November. Two course are £14.99 and a third for only £2 extra.
Sandra will be attending club on Mondays and possibly at other times.
Irish Cross Country Success
Seamus Robinson (pictured in the colours of his Irish club – City of Derry Spartans) came away from the Northern Ireland Cross Country Championships / International Cross Country event in Belfast with gold in the U20 race. He also finished 9th overall in the combined senior men’s and U20 race which included a European Championships 5000m gold medalist and other international runners. Next target is the Irish National XC Champs in November. Thanks to Martin Robinson for the report.
Blaise Parkrun – Saturday 28th October
A lovely sunny morning and an enjoyable run with a group of Westbury Harriers who kept each other going. A slightly altered course to avoid some of the mud but a bonus extra 100 metres as a result! Thanks to the team who helped open up the clubhouse and organise the drinks! Report by Mark Andrews.
Gwent League – Saturday 11th November
The next Gwent Cross Country League, which is also combined with the Cardiff X will be held at Llandaff Fields, Cardiff. The event is held in conjunction with the Cardiff Cross Challenge, on Saturday 11th November. As well as being the first fixture of the nationwide British Cross Challenge Series, the event will also be a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold Label Event, so you’ll be able to shine against some of the world’s finest cross-country runners.
If you want your run to count in both the Gwent League and the Cardiff Cross Challenge, then you need to enter the Cardiff Cross Challenge and entries close on Thursday 2nd November. https://cardiffcrosschallenge.co.uk/enter/
Further details about the event including travel information, a course map and timetable can be found on the Gwent League website which I’ve linked below. https://www.gwent-league.org.uk/fixtures.html
Club Championship Races
The next event in the series is the Nightingale Nightmare on Sunday 29th October, I do hope you’ve got your Halloween outfits sorted! That event is followed by the Weston Prom Run on Thursday 9th November. Entries have opened for the Prom, please book using the link below. https://race-nation.co.uk/register/weston-ac/the-weston-prom-run-november-2023
