In Memory of David Roughley

I’m afraid I have to bring you the very sad news that David Roughley passed away on July 21st aged 76.

Peter Keogan tells me that David was one of the first people to welcome him when he first joined the club in the mid 1980’s. He was a keen cross-country and road runner, as was his wife Sue, who ran in a remarkable one hundred successive Gwent League fixtures !

David also assisted Gary Morgan in the organization of the clubs own Multi-Terrain 10, which first took place in 1986 and was to last for twelve years.

His son, David Jnr., was a talented long jumper, winning the A.A.A. Youths Indoor and Outdoor titles in 1984. Both David and Sue were to become Vice Presidents of the club.

David’s Funeral Service will take place at St Chad’s Church, Rodway Road, Patchway at 11a.m. on Tuesday August 15th, followed by a committal at Canford.

Peter hope’s to be able to get to the service to represent the club and has sent a sympathy card to Sue on behalf of us all.

Rose Inn Series Race 4, by Mark Andrews

The lure of Club Championship points along with a hint in the name that a pub might be involved was always going to persuade a large crowd of Westbury Harriers to venture across to Wales last night!

A new race venue for most of us and a slightly unusual race distance made for a bit of an adventure on a Tuesday evening!

The race itself is a 4 mile road race around a two lap course. Fast and flat, finishing next to the pub in Redwick village but mostly on country roads with nothing more than fellow runners and cows for company and some farmyard smells to freshen up the country air!

A lovely evening for racing, warm with a breeze, rain for the last half mile or so for most of us but the speedsters would have been home and dry by then! The first  Westbury athlete home was Junior Thomas Darton in an impressive 22:34, well done Tom!

The first Senior finisher in a great time of 19:44 was not attached to a club. Unfortunately, before we could get his signature on a Membership form he explained he is only visiting from Japan!

First Westbury Senior was Ian Gawinowski who bags maximum Club Championship points along with First Lady Becky Lee. Well run to you both!

No Age Group prizes are awarded but kudos to Maggie Salter (V60) and Sandy Masters (V65) for their Age Group first places. it looked like it would be one of those rare evenings when Sandy Masters would go home without a prize, but just as we were leaving it was announced that she had smashed the course record in her category and normal service was restored! In addition the Men’s Team finished in a creditable 3rd place and the Ladies in 6th (but with Sandy’s result missing so may improve).

Lots of really strong runs, no doubt many 4 mile PBs and I spotted on Strava a few 5k PBs too! Well done to everyone who took part.
