Weekly News – Monday 3rd June 2024

WESTBURY HARRIERS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – 3/06/24

Apologies for a late edition of this week’s newsletter. We were away camping in the Lake District for the OMM Lite festival but the weekend got slightly derailed by a poorly child. All well now though and I’d highly recommend the OMM Lite festival as a super family friendly weekend in the hills – you can either do the orienteering score events on both Saturday or Sunday (visit as many controls in 5 or 7hrs), or there are a range of different trail races on over the weekend ranging from a kids’ teddy dash for under 5s up to the Grasmere Gallop marathon. Well done to Iain Large for 8th place on Saturday’s 7hr Long Score.

On home turf, tonight saw the return of the club’s brilliant Blaise Blazer race. There was a great turn-out, despite the clash this year with the Hogweed Trot. I’m sure a full race report will follow but many thanks to all the wonderful Westbury marshals, volunteers and cake bakers for putting on such a great event! Some great photos up on Facebook already from Ian and Richard.

No race reports this week (apologies if I’ve missed any) but there’s quite a lot coming up this week on the local midweek racing front:

  • Tuesday 4 June 2024 7:30pm: The next event in the Club Championship calendar, the Sri Chiminoy 2 mile race around 2 laps of Eastville park. A really good crowd of Westbury runners will be there. Entries online or on the night.
  • Wednesday 5 June 2024 7:30pm: The next race in the Bitton 5k series. Usually a competitive but fun group from the club turn up for this fairly fast and flat 5k race, out and back along the Bristol/Bath cycle path from Bitton Station. Again entries online or on the night.

Also don’t forget it’s the Club Supper at the Black Swan after Thursday training!

CLUB NOTICES

Academy training

Just a reminder that Gold and Silver groups will return to Blaise for 10th/17th/24th June and 8th July. On these dates the children will have the chance to run in the river – and so will return wet – you may want to think about a change of clothes/towel. If you do not want your child to get wet – please let them and me know – they do not have to do this. Thanks

Monday 15th July will be our last session and will be at Stoke Lodge from 6.30-8pm for all groups. (If you can’t get there for 6.30 – come when you can)
Monday 1st July there will be no training. It’s the Westbury wipeout – a running race for children in Blaise organised by Westbury Harriers. A lot of the children enter this event. Sign up details to follow. Thanks, Carrie

Club Supper

This month’s club supper is happening on Thursday 6th June after Thursday intervals – 8.15pm at the Black Swan. Bookings needed to be made by 2nd June but do look out for the next one if you missed it next time.

Cotswold Way Relay

The Cotswold Way relay is taking place on Sat 6th July. The relay consists of 10 sections varying in distance from 7 to 13 miles, along the route of the Cotswold Way from Chipping Camden to Bath and all with spectacular views.

We have three teams entered and 24 enthusiastic runners already signed up. Just 4 places left so if you are interested in taking part, then please let me know via our Facebook page.

The organisers have requested we provide two volunteers to help at a stage 9 road crossing (which is close to Bristol) this would be about 3pm. Volunteers don’t have to be club members.
