Rose Inn 4 Mile Race: Club Championship 2025 – Mark Andrews
Perfect weather conditions tonight for the 4 mile road race around the fast and flat 2 lap course.
These races always attract a good standard of runners from the South Wales clubs we are more used to seeing in the mud of the Gwent League!
Four miles is a distance we don’t get to race very often so working out how to pace the race is challenging! The bonus however is that these races do feature in the Power of Ten national rankings for a distance not raced very often, so many of us will feature quite prominently when results are updated!
The lure of Club Championship points meant that Westbury Harriers were well represented throughout the field, the turnout was particularly impressive bearing in mind how many of us also raced in the Bristol Half Marathon and 10k on Sunday! Well done to everyone who took part tonight!
Technical difficulties mean no results out until tomorrow, but here are some photos of tonight’s Westbury athletes in action!
CLUB NEWS AND REMINDERS
*CLUB KIT WHEN RACING*
A few runners have asked recently about the wearing of club vests when racing.
It is a specific requirement of most team events that all runners wear club colours and you can be disqualified if you don’t do so. This includes events such as The Gwent League, Cross Country Championships, Road Relays.
For other races, whilst the wearing of the club colours is not mandatory the Club strongly encourages all runners to wear them. It it’s important that our efforts throughout the field are seen by everyone, seeing the Westbury vests out there will encourage others to join us and existing members to think about having a go at racing.
As a runner you will really see the advantages of running in Club Colours, you will feel part of Team Westbury and get lots of encouragement and support from your team mates and supporters. The Club is well respected in the local running community, Marshalls and spectators not connected to the club always seem to give an encouraging shout out to a Westbury runner!
The Club Vests can be purchased from our membermojo store – SEE LINK IN NEXT NOTICE
For those of us who like to keep our shoulders covered there is also a T shirt option or long sleeves are also an option. Other styles and colours of Club branded vests and shirts are available for purchase from the Club Online store on the Website. These alternatives are for training not racing.
For those who don’t have a vest but are thinking of having a go at racing many of us have acquired a selection of vests over the years and a shout out to borrow one is well worth a try.
It is also worth remembering that the Club Committee will always consider requests for assistance with costs for anyone in economic difficulty.
The summer season is packed with enjoyable and well organised local races, many attracting plenty of Westbury runners of all ages and abilities. We look forward to seeing lots of Westbury vests in action, maybe including a few who haven’t raced before or don’t race so often!

* URBAN ORIENTEERING – COOMBE DINGLE – Weds 4th June *
It was great to see lots of Westbury Harriers at the recent orienteering event at Blaise Castle and it was brilliant to have use of the WH pavilion for the day. We (Hannah and Iain Large) are now organising an urban orienteering event on Wednesday 4th June at Coombe Dingle. Urban orienteering is much more straightforward in terms of navigation as controls are generally just on things like lampposts, benches, fences etc. You’ll get a map of Coombe Dingle / WoT and then you’ll need to get all the controls as quickly as you can. Entries are now open here: https://pre-entries.co.uk/dl/events/s/b75f6b/r/7bDsIh9JH7DPGafyB7Xy Short, medium and long courses available. Start anytime between 5.30 – 7.30pm. The short course is also open to U16s as it stays entirely within Coombe Dingle Sports Complex and then on paths into Canford Park.
