Club Championship
With the cancellation of the Gwent League at Singleton Park we now only have two Club Championship events left to the end of season. On Sunday 15th March it is the San Dominco 20 miler and then at the end of the month we have the Forest of Dean Half Marathon on Sunday 29th March.
The Future of the Academy
Emma W has been involved with the academy (formerly Reception Group) since her daughter started in 2014, firstly as a helper then as a qualified volunteer Leader after taking the LIRF (Leadership in Running Fitness) qualification. Over these years, she has seen many individual and team successes in a range of events such as The Gwent League, the Tri-Counties, the Gloucester League, as well as many children going on to represent Bristol and Avon at regional and national level.
The Academy currently requires 6 qualified LIRF volunteer leaders and 9 parent helpers per week in order for all of our 50 children to enjoy their running session safely and to make progress as athletes. Our team of volunteers do an amazing job and it is through their enthusiasm and commitment that Westbury Harriers has continued to achieve success. As Academy co-ordinator, her role has been to liaise with the volunteer leaders and helpers to make sure we have requisite numbers each week, send out weekly rota’s and to generally ensure that the academy runs as smoothly as possible. Now that she has completed her Coaching in Running Fitness qualification she is also assisting with coaching the Junior Girls, and as her youngest runner Tom will be moving on to the Junior Boys section, it is now the right time for her to pass the baton of Academy co-ordinator onto someone else!
If you are interested in taking this on, please email Emma directly and she will be happy to talk through it in more detail- you do not need to be a runner to take on this role. In September, there will be a real necessity to find new volunteer qualified leaders as many of our current team will also be moving on with their children. The club will pay for people to complete the course (link below) so she urge’s you to consider taking up the course and getting involved in your child’s sport – you really can make a massive difference to young people’s confidence and achievement through volunteering. Quite simply, without a committed team of volunteers the academy will fold.

Race Write – Ups
This weekend was planned to be the Gwent League event at Singleton Park. Unfortunately this had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions. Instead, a few Westbury runners headed to Old Down Country Park to take part in the Gloucester Cross Country League. Well done to Estelle and Charlotte for winning the Under 11’s and Under 15’s race. Felicity also ran extremely well coming 4th in the under 13’s. Congratulations to all the other Westbury members who ran.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Katie for running on Saturday. By going out on this day she earned herself the Garmin ‘Take the Leap’ badge. The next chance to run on Sat 29th Feb is in 2048. I’m too much of a gentleman to say how old Katie will be on this day!
