Westbury Harriers – Weekly News
I’ve spent the afternoon at the inaugural Bristol Running Show at Ashton Court House. The event featured motivational speakers and there were plenty of stands for exhibitors showing the latest gear, equipment and nutritional products.
Most of the running clubs in the Bristol area were represented including Westbury Harriers. With people popping in throughout the day a number of them made a beeline to the Westbury stand. They had the opportunity to talk with club members, view some of our presentational material and take away a club leaflet. Hopefully they will take up the offer of a few trial sessions and decide to become club members.
Tuesday Track and Thursday Intervals
Details will be provided on facebook nearer the time.
Gwent Cross Country League Pembrey
The third event in the John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League takes place at Pembrey Country Park next Saturday on the 3rd December. It’s a great course with sand dunes to climb and views of the sea.
Sign up for seniors is now available on the RunTogether site. Details of the event, timings, parking etc are on the link below. https://www.gwent-league.org.uk/fixtures.html
Christmas Cracker and Shirehampton Santa Dash
Some great news for those that love running in fancy dress. There’s still time to enter the Christmas Cracker or Shirehampton Santa Dash, both of which take place next Sunday.
The Christmas Cracker 10k takes place along Weston sea front with a combination of running along the beach and closed roads. Do brace yourself for some windy weather as it’s very exposed along the sea front. Another tip is to avoid using tinsel on your outfit as it can interfere with the chip timing. Pictured below, some of last years runners.
If you fancy something a little more local and shorter (it’s 5km) how about the Shire Santa Dash. A very family friendly event (you can take little ones in pushchairs) and all profits go towards the Christmas Lights in Shirehampton. Entry includes full Santa suit and a finishers medal.

In the last newsletter I gave the dates for adults but forgot to include the dates for Juniors and Academy which are now shown below.

You will have already been e-mailed the SGM Motion on the 6th November in readiness for our Special General Meeting. This meeting is being held remotely via Zoom to allow as many members as possible to attend (details were provided in the same message). If you can’t find the email, let me know and I’ll forward it on.
Just a reminder that your membership includes a number of club benefits such as race discounts, club competitions, the club championship series and naturally the Weekly Newsletter! More details can be found on our club website using the link below. https://westburyharriers.co.uk/membership/benefits-of-membership/
Wednesday Evening Social Run
The club have an informal social run most Wednesday evenings from the water tower on the Downs from 6:30pm. They run about 7 miles at a chatty group 4 pace, usually around Clifton and the docks. Check facebook for details of the next run.
In my opinion it’s far too early for Christmas photo’s but nonetheless the group managed to avoid the rain while running past a few festively decorated landmarks. At Santa’s grotto Mark asked Father Christmas very nicely if he could sit on his knee but was told he’s far too old for that sort of thing!
Lisbon Super Half – Sunday 12th March
After a cold and bleak winter who fancies some sunshine in early March, combined with a scenic (and flat) half Marathon in Lisbon? If you do then why not join the half dozen or so Westbury Harriers that have already signed up? With almost daily Easyjet flights from Bristol and plenty of accommodation options in the city it’s too good an opportunity to miss.
If interested take a look at the details in the link below and I can also add your details to our Messenger group. https://westburyharriers.co.uk/weekly-news-saturday-15th-october/
Tomorrow (Sunday) we have the Chepstow Racecourse Half Marathon starting at 09:30. We only have a handful of events left in the club championship series so if you’re after additional club championship points then this is worth doing. It also looks as if the website is still open for online entries so if you fancy doing it, book now! https://www.runthrough.co.uk/chepstow-racecourse-5k-10k-half-marathon-november-2022/
The next club championship event after that is the Christmas Cracker next Sunday
Gwent League Blaise Castle Race Report by Tamsin Elson Chick
A huge well done and thank-you to the senior/master ladies squad at the Blaise Gwent League fixture. We set ourselves two challenges. To get a record breaking Westbury ladies turnout, which we needed over 40 to achieve and to rise to Mike Mewse’s challenge and win the men vs women trophy. We did both. Getting 50 ladies running was fantastic to see, with every few places another Westbury vest going by. Having this many has really boosted us up in all team categories and many people are now well placed overall individually. Well done to the men’s team as well, as it was great to see their largest turnout ever too.
The weather was much kinder than last season’s fixture, with lots commenting it was actually a bit too hot. Be careful what you wish for! Blaise is a deceivingly challenging course, but there were some great runs – too many to mention all.
Fabulous to have our U20 Tilly running her first senior Gwent fixture and finishing in the top ten, along with Bridget Belfourd who had her best ever Gwent run. With the ever consistent Katie and Vicky coming in closely behind and newcomer Anya packing in next in her Westbury Gwent debut the A team were home.
Along with Anya we welcomed Roberta, Anna, Rachel, Yvette, Jenny, Jennifer, Debbie, Rosie, Ann, Mandy, Abigail and Emma-Jane to their first WH Gwent outing – well done, we hope you will be back for many more. A special mention to our v65 team who took the top 4 v65 positions on the day and three of them are V70.
Senior team 2nd on the day, B Team 9th, C team 14th , D team 17th, E team 22nd, F team 27th, G team 30th, H team 35th, I team 53rd, J team 73rd out of 84 teams on the day. Only club to have a F, G, H, I and J team!
The A team are currently in 2nd position overall.
Reserve Davison – B team are currently in 2nd in the reserve division, C team 4th , D team 8th , E team 11th, F team 17th, G team 19th, H team 24th, I team 30th and J team 39th
Current Age groups team standings
